Introducing Fazil Maniar @fazrazjazz

Fazil Maniar is a contemporary artist that explores the edges of the lived experience. His practice is rooted in his personal history of pain, identity and cultural dislocation.
Growing up in the 1980’s and 90’s in England as part of a diaspora, Experiencing what he described as a quiet abandonment as his parents were immersed in building a new life, he felt the need to perform visibility, to hide in plain sight through adhering to britishness at the cost of his Asian heritage in order to seek safety, belonging and love. Alongside this, spirituality forms a vital thread in his practice as an intimate space of healing, grounding and quiet resistance. by @fazrazjazz

So it’s been a good 8 years since I have actually done some photography for my self Most of the stuff I have posted here on Instagram was from a trip I took to japan in 2011 or earlier. I really lost all my motivation and didn’t think I had it in me anymore as work and life happened and you know things have a habit of fizzling away if you don’t tend to it. So I told my self do something! Do anything! So I decided to get out of my comfort zone and I ended up hiring a model and took to the hills. This was totally out of my comfort zone because I am in no way a portrait photographer... I always thought I was too introverted to be one. Any way here’s my stab at portraiture with my fantastic model @michaelaknightmodelling ⁣

Man I gotta admit something it’s been a while since I’ve actually tried to do some proper photography and on a recent trip to Morocco I thought I would be taking so many amazing photos but I actually feel so out of practice. It might sound totally weird and I’m sure my fellow photographers understand this but when you really get into photography you develop a heightened way of seeing the world and when that heightened perception syncs with your heart that’s when the magic happens. For me during my short time in Marrakesh it didn’t happen for me. I guess I posted this photo cause it was the only photo on this day I felt close to achieving that feeling. Maybe I’m being too harsh on my self but then again I know I just gotta keep doing it for myself till it’s clicks. ⁣

Never really been much of a social media person but trying to learn about it has been really interesting and has actually sparked up my love for photography again. ⁣
⁣
It’s time to dip my toes back into those dreams I had back in my early 20’s! I’m interested in doing a bunch of studies and getting into areas of photography I was always dissuaded to do when I was at university. Just hope I can keep this fire alive! ⁣

I was roaming around a random town I’ve never been to before while I waited for my friend to finish work. I walked down an alley way and spotted this cute jerk chilling out on his own. I really should have photoshopped in some bottles of alcohol around him, you probably wouldn’t even noticed the difference 😂. ⁣

Throw back Tuesday 😂 when I first started photography I was so god damn shy. I remember having permission to shoot the fights but I was soooo god damn scared to go ring side. My curiosity and love for photography got the better of me and I ended up slowly creeping up to the ring side and having a blast. This was one of my favourite shots from that night and unfortunately the only one I scanned and saved on my computer. Oh how I’ve changed and grown more confident over the years. But one thing that hasn’t changed .... I still hate using flash guns. I shot this on 1600iso film, if you ever see me light stuff I’m always using continuous light or natural light. ⁣

I once had a Polaroid fail on me. Lol but I refused to let it fail and I pushed out all the chemicals to produce something different. ⁣
