I’m lucky enough to have a job description that includes being moved by beautiful things, and then creating/curating a container to share them with others. Song Salon is one of those containers. Maybe my favorite one.

I knew @amyraleon was going to mess me up but I didn’t know the extent to which 🥀

Sometimes you come across an artist who has an almost otherworldly ability to convey feeling and emotion in its most raw, most unfiltered form. In a way that possesses you - or liberates its counterpart inside you. Sometimes you witness something that you can’t recount in words - you just know how it feels. Like when she sang “I am anointed” and every cell in my body knew that was not just a lyric, baby.

This was one of those performances that my body can’t forget. I watched on the verge of tears, IN tears and the most heart-aching awe as someone opened themselves up. Completely. In the

Most.
Exquisite.
Way.

What an honor to be trusted to hold the work someone has poured themselves into.

A whole month ago, I had a birthday. Planned every single moment of the “perfect birthday”. That was my first mistake 😅

We were supposed to wake up in Rome, have a final cappuccino and pistachio croissant before getting onto a perfectly timed bus>train>ferry to our new destination. It was PERFECT! We would check out with exactly enough time for delicious activities before perfectly timed transit and connections to get us to the next place just in time to check in so there would be no luggage loitering.

Ha.

First we got yelled at by an old Italian man for using the wrong bins (🤦🏽‍♀️don’t even get me started on Italy and its bins. I respect it. But it’s very complicated…)
No time for the final local cappuccino but I got some pastries* for the train ride. I was going to salvage the plan FFS.

Made the train!

The train broke down.

Imagine thinking someone would help you get information or buy new tickets? Nope.

Ran around Naples with all our luggage in the blistering heat to get a bus.

Couldn’t find the bus stop.

More running.

New bus tickets.

Got to the dock with one minute to spare.
RAN ahead to the ferry to beg them to wait (because we’d already missed our actual ferry).
Grovelled. Made the ferry.

Everything that could have gone wrong did. Nothing went according to my perfect plan. Chaos wasn’t on the itinerary. We were meant to calmly sail in - spritz in hand, but instead we were dragged in by the grace of God and an unbothered but kind ginger-haired Italian sailor. We arrived hot, bothered, tired, sweaty and grumpy… BUT WE ARRIVED 😅

And it was breathtaking.

And I think that’s appropriate for this new decade.
Nothing is as I planned it. And when I stop fixating on my plan-graveyard, I see what’s been trying to show up the whole time🌱

A beautiful life, with beautiful people - better than anything I could have orchestrated. You can’t plan your own delight 💫 (so they say, but we’ll see about that)

*RIP to the pastries though… the chaos of the day left you squashed and delicious at the bottom of my bag.

Happy birthday to my dear friend and human home-away-from-home, the Afro-Latina Queen, incredible mother/daughter/wife/multiple business-owner and FRIEND - Fanny ✨

I couldn’t imagine a New York life without you - who knew we’d be finding soul-friends in our *mid to late*cough* thirties 🥹

Always up for it, up to it, creative, smart and fun. So much fun.

Grateful for you, and that I get to watch you pursue life and everything it has to offer. Grateful to be walking into a new chapter beside you - color palette in tow.

This is 40.

It’s my baby sister’s 21st birthday ❤️🥹❤️

The truest Aries you’ll ever know.
She starts things.
She finishes things.
She wins things.
She says things and she does things.

Haylez you have always had some kind of fiery magic. A determined baby who wanted to walk when it looked weird for a baby that small to be walking.

A fierce athlete who made hard things look easy… with an emotional big sister who wept every time she got to witness you.

Whatever furnace that’s powering your life is burning at a different temperature to the rest of us and it’s so amazing to watch you blazing your own trail.

My big-sister-wish for you is to keep that fire burning and never let any thing/person/moment put it out.

Today @651arts was featured in the @nytimes, just ahead of our official opening and first public performance later in the month.

Truly a moment.

The move into this building, the work it has taken not only in this chapter but beyond that, the work that preceded and allowed us to be here – talk about collective effort ✨

The article features our season artist, @amzrpg, just one week before his and our world premiere.

We premiere our space to an audience…

He premieres ‘Against Gravity’!

My favorite part of this whole process is always right at the beginning. When we dream together about what this project could be and how we would want to execute it if anything was possible.

I have no doubt someone before me dreamed of this moment…

And here we are trying to make it possible – against all odds.

That means we’ve been friends for more of our lives than we haven’t!

Met this guy in high school and forced my friendship on him in a way that you could only do in the early oughts 👀

Got to be young and obnoxious together, reckless together. Now more measured, mature and responsible-ish together. Annoyed at badly made food and… obnoxious youth, together 😅

What an honour to get to grow alongside a person for 27 years and still love them dearly. More!

There is no one more honest, and no one less impressed by my choice of suitors 😂

This year the homesickness really kicked in.

What they don’t tell you when you’re making your vision board about “life in New York” is how much it ACHES to have your whole heart living on another continent.
Missing all the birthdays, all the babies, all the happy times and being able to be there and hug people in the sad times.

Grateful for my 6 nights with the people that are literally embedded in my soul 🥲

Love you. Miss you. Forever.
