POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
It’s been a couple weeks since I joined, so I figured it was time to make one of these and share a bit more about myself. Obviously I am a huge nerd with fantastic taste (other people say that not me), and I am grateful to everyone who so far has enjoyed listening to me ramble about my favorite fantasy books. My friends & family thank you for your sacrifice. I’ve met some really cool people and have been pleasantly surprised by how kind the community is here on bookstagram. Tell me what we have in common below! If you’re new here, feel free to drop a follow and then unfollow shortly after once you realize the grave mistake you made by allowing me on your screen.

A live-action Red Rising adaptation has been announced, and suddenly the most important question on the internet is who they’re going to cast. Darrow can have his revolution. I’m investing everything in Short King stock. 📈

Pierce Brown gave us one of the most unhinged characters in science fiction, and I don’t think the world is ready for him yet in live action.

Red Rising fans: Who would you cast as Sevro? And should they actually make him attractive? 💀

Why are some of the best fantasy characters such terrible people?

Sand dan Glokta from Joe Abercrombie’s The First Law is one of my favorite examples of a morally gray character done right.

He’s bitter, cruel, and not exactly someone I’d invite over for dinner. But he’s also one of the most fascinating characters I’ve ever read.

I think that’s what makes morally gray characters so compelling. Good writing doesn’t necessarily make us agree with someone. It makes us understand them.

And sometimes, the characters we’d absolutely hate in real life are the ones we love reading about most.

Who’s a fantasy character you love but would NEVER want to meet in real life?

Tired of seeing the same fantasy book recommendations everywhere? I’ve got you.

As someone who reads a lot of fantasy, I pride myself on discovering obscure, underrated fantasy series that most readers have probably never heard of.

Today, I’m sharing a few hidden gems from a relatively unknown author named J.R.R. Tolkien.

Please try to keep these recommendations within the community. I’d hate for them to become mainstream.

What’s another criminally underrated fantasy series that deserves more attention? Wrong answers only.

Every fantasy author coming up with a new book:

Elemental magic? Obviously.

Dead parents? Practically a requirement.

At this point, I’m convinced fantasy writers are all working from the same checklist. And somehow, I’ll still read every single one of these books.

Fantasy readers and writers, what’s another fantasy trope that authors absolutely refuse to retire?

I’ve been on Bookstagram for about two weeks, and I’ve noticed something strange.

So much of my feed is about growing a Bookstagram account instead of actually talking about books.

And I get it. We all want our content to reach people. But somewhere along the way, it feels like the follower count became more important than the community we’re supposed to be building.

My favorite part of being here hasn’t been the numbers. It’s been discovering new fantasy books, meeting other readers, supporting each other’s posts, and having conversations about stories we love.

I’d rather have a small community of people who genuinely enjoy talking about books than thousands of followers who never interact.

Are we getting too caught up in growing our accounts and forgetting why we started them?

5 fantasy books I read in 2026 that perfectly encapsulated the different things I love about stories.

While these are mostly the highest-rated books of the year for me, they are more importantly the five that reminded me of the different things I love about fantasy.

The wonderfully flawed characters of Joe Abercrombie’s The Trouble with Peace. The beautiful prose of Guy Gavriel Kay’s A Song for Arbonne. The enormous, mysterious world of Steven Erikson’s Gardens of the Moon. The pure entertainment of Jim Butcher’s Death Masks. And the friendship and banter of Royce and Hadrian in Michael J. Sullivan’s The Death of Dulgath.

Five very different books. Five different reasons I keep coming back to fantasy.

What’s one book you’ve read in 2026 that reminded you why you love reading?

Richard Swan’s books have been on my radar for a long time. Empire of the Wolf is a series that has been on my TBR for ages now, and I’ve heard nothing but great things about the Great Silence follow up series too. That being said, HOW DID I NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS? They got aquatic races in here, armored sharks, and I have not once seen anyone talk about these very important things. Why?

By far the worst part about being a reader and collecting books is that not every book is made equal. I am a perfectionist and often find myself incredibly jealous of everyone’s bookshelf setups and organization on here. What’s even worse though? When there is a problem you can’t fix.

This is the case with my Riyria Chronicles leatherbounds by Michael J. Sullivan. I ordered these a while back, and unfortunately did not realize that Death of Dulgath’s press was completely off-center until it was too late.

It haunts my dreams and drives me insane. Unfortunately this is the burden I must bear, the burden of a book collector. Do you have a wonky book in your collection? What is it?

By far my favorite part of reading fantasy books, or really any book, is characters. So with that in mind, as I work to find a routine of content that feels the most authentic to me, I’m going to make this a part of my weekly series. First Law by Joe Abercrombie is my favorite series with my favorite morally grey characters that I have ever read, so this felt like a natural first post. Logen Ninefingers and the crew are all compelling for different reasons. Some are hilarious. Some are insufferable. Most of them are deeply flawed. That’s what makes First Law so fascinating. Joe doesn’t need to write likeable people to make them fascinating. What series should I do next? Who are your favorite characters in books and why? What’s one character driven series you would recommend to every character first reader? Let me know, and if you’d like to see more character focused posts, drop a follow!

It is quite possible that Guy Gavriel Kay is the best living fantasy author. Granted, I have only read two of his books so far but he really is that good. Lions of Al-Rassan has everything you could want out of a fantasy story. Friendship, tragedy, love, and everything in between. If you haven’t read any GGK yet, you are doing yourself a great disservice. That being said, which of his books should I read next?

I admit I am guilty of writing off many books because of their label. I’ve spent enough time judging a genre I haven’t actually read. Time to fix that. The reality of this discourse, for me at least, is that there are likely tons of incredible fantasy books written by women that are being missed out on because of publishers labeling them as “Romantasy” for marketing purposes.

What does Romantasy actually even mean?

Romantasy readers, you get ONE recommendation to change my mind. Make it count!
