Our Club Lunch with Jonathan Cheng, author of Korean Messiah, is now on the FCC's podcast The Correspondent.

Listen now: https://open.spotify.com/episode/0UVfKBWsurKYbVA8vj6RWD

North Korea wasn’t always the world’s most oppressive dictatorship and harshest persecutor of Christianity. In fact, the capital Pyongyang was once known as the “Jerusalem of the East” with one of the largest Christian populations in all of Asia.

Jonathan Cheng, the Beijing Bureau Chief for the Wall Street Journal, has spent over a decade investigating Pyongyang’s Christian origins for Korean Messiah, a 700-page deep-dive into how Kim Il Sung’s religious upbringing has shaped North Korea as it’s known today.

At an FCC Club Lunch in September, Cheng sat alongside Jennifer Jett @redpenjenn , Asia Digital Editor for NBC News and an FCC Correspondent Governor, to discuss the origins of his new book and what these revelations mean for North and South Korean politics.
