#MyStoryMonday – meet Jack Castleberry, head coach of @fduknightsmbb “My name is Jack Castleberry, I’ve been the head men’s basketball coach at FDU for four years now. My wife Kara and I have been married for 10 years and have three daughters: Amelia (8), Harper (5), and Avery (2), who has Down syndrome. When we received Avery’s diagnosis, we were shocked and uncertain. I was never afraid, but the unknown was difficult to navigate. In speaking with our doctors, we better understood some potential health challenges Avery might face and the resources and solutions available to support her. Finding information and resources helped us feel more at peace, and we began to feel excited about the joy Avery would bring into our lives. The first two years have been incredible. Avery’s a fun, joyful child who makes people smile simply by walking into a room. She’s helped the entire family put things into perspective and has made all of us better people. Watching her interact with other kids at daycare has been especially rewarding. She seems to be everyone’s favorite and participates in the same activities as the other children. My wife and I hope she will have the opportunity to hold a job, live independently, and experience the same milestones and opportunities that others have. While she’s surrounded by acceptance now, we wonder if the world will remain as accepting and inclusive as she gets older. We hope she will continue to have strong relationships and a community that embraces her. Above all, we want her to enjoy life to the fullest extent of her abilities.  NDSS was a helpful resource for my family as we learned about Down syndrome, and I hope that by partnering with them and wearing their logo on our jerseys this season, the FDU men’s basketball team can help people better understand Down syndrome. I was impressed by how enthusiastically our team got behind the initiative. Several players have relatives with disabilities and are particularly excited to support the cause. I couldn’t ask for a better group of players. We’re excited to play a small part in making the world a more welcoming, inclusive, and happier place.” by @fduwhatsnew
