@berlinmarathon 2026, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t feel the pressure. Warm weather, second year in a row. I carb-loaded poorly and failed to take in enough salts and hydration this week.

I focused on having a clear mind, almost emotionless at the start, believing in myself and all my training. I actually found a bench at a Tiergarten and slept for 30 minutes before I started shivering. Then I got up, joined the runners warming up, and headed to the start: a proper leg-swing routine with ankle, core, hip rotations, kickbacks and I was ready to get this marathon started.

I waited for the 3-hour pacer, then took off with him. He helped pave the way because it was a fast start amongst all the crowd. The crowd was crazy to get through; people shoving each other and screaming out for space. Marathon is organized chaos after all.

I told myself: aim for a half-marathon PB, then see how it goes. 22K came fast, so I locked in a steady, fast pace till 30K. At 33K, the cramping started. I was in agonizing pain. I had consumed the salt tabs as per plan, yet the heat, my intensity of effort, and poor hydration before the race resulted in total lower-body cramps. I decided not to cave in and eat the pain; I’ve had worse. I ran limping, like an animal. I didn’t care that several people in the crowd were laughing at me; there were more who cheered me on: “You got this,” “On time for sub-3,” “Let’s goo,” “South Africaaa,” “Bafana Bafana,” “Vamos.” So I steadied myself, kept up with my Maurten fueling, and pushed on. I was so hungry I ended up consuming 10 gels total.

It was getting too close at the finish, with cramps intensifying at any moment, but I had overcome the pain cave and ran straight to the finish. Emotions were still under control till the end, so I just started congratulating and high-fiving everyone around me. Walked straight to the Alkoholfrei stand, chose the Zitrone edition, and chatted with runners who were mostly unhappy with their times due to the weather. I, on the other hand, got my job done.

Thanks to all the legends I train with, from runners to strength coaches and the energy of the people in Bali who are ready to support all the time. taken in Berlin, Deutschland by @fearless.running

Berlin 2021: my first ever marathon. Pandemic training, transatlantic flights, COVID restrictions: nothing stopped me from getting to that start line. That race kicked off a journey I’ve kept alive every year since.

And this year? First sub‑3. Back when sub‑4 felt impossible..

Heading into fall ‘26 / what a year it’s been, and the story isn’t over..

With another big trip on the horizon, it’s time to wrap up the progress I’ve made here on this island and put it to work out in the world. I’ll carry forward the lessons learned, the mistakes owned, and the new strength I’ve built in mind and body.

If this year proved one thing, it’s that anything is achievable.
