There are certain people whose words mean a great deal because you know they understand the substance behind what you have written.

Catherine Toon is one of those people for me.

When she sent me her endorsement for Am I a Prophet?, this portion especially stayed with me:

“There has been much confusion, covenantal mixture, and, frankly, unhealthiness within the Body of Christ regarding the function of a prophet. When we start from a faulty premise, we inevitably arrive at faulty conclusions. When our foundation is sound, however, we are better equipped to carry the weight of our calling and navigate the rigors of ministry and life.”

Yes. This.

We can have sincere hearts and genuine encounters with God and still interpret what we are experiencing through a framework that needs to be renewed.

That is why the foundation matters so much.

Catherine recognized that Am I a Prophet? is not simply addressing whether someone carries the function of a prophet. It is addressing the framework from which we even attempt to discern that question.

Christ. His finished work. Identity. Covenant. Mind renewal. Function. Maturity. Healthy stewardship.

I am deeply grateful for Catherine’s voice, her friendship, and the generosity of this endorsement. To have someone I respect understand the heart and substance of this book so clearly means more than I can adequately say.

And I am grateful that Am I a Prophet? is now out in the world doing what it was written to do.

The need to be right can quietly become one of the greatest obstacles to spiritual maturity.

Whenever our highest priority becomes defending a conclusion, we stop listening with the humility that allows truth to continue shaping us.

Christ never invited us to build our identity around being right.

He invited us to follow Him.

That requires a heart that remains teachable, a mind that remains willing to repent, and a confidence that is rooted in Christ rather than in always having the correct answer.

Some of the most significant moments of growth begin when we stop asking, "How do I defend my position?" and begin asking, "Lord, what are You wanting to show me?"

Truth has nothing to fear from honest examination.

Neither should we.

We just hit:

#️⃣11 on Amazon in Christian Leadership
#️⃣33 on Amazon in Religious Leadership

But what’s happening behind the scenes is what matters.

Leaders in the U.S., UK, and Canada are opening this and saying:

“I’ve only read four pages and already hit five mic-drop moments. I’m going to have to dwell in this, not just read it.”

“My copy arrived today, and I already have pages full of underlines. So good.”

“If you’re weary from striving and performance has become your unseen burden, this book is a lifeline.
Read it slowly. Read it expectantly. It will change your walk with the Lord forever.”

This isn’t something you fly through.

It will confront what’s been driving you.
It will reveal what’s been misaligned.
And it will bring you back into alignment.

Leaders know when something carries weight.

That’s why they’re not just reading it.
They’re sitting with it.

Apostles and prophets, we need to be careful that discernment does not train our eyes to look for darkness more readily than we recognize Christ.

There is a kind of sight that can identify everything out of order and still fail to reveal Jesus.

That should concern us.

The New Covenant does not form us through fascination with what is wrong. Paul says that as we behold the Lord, we are transformed into His image (2 Corinthians 3:18).

We become like the One who holds our gaze.

This matters deeply for apostles and prophets because both graces see beneath the surface. Both are foundational. Both participate in bringing the Body into greater maturity and alignment with Christ. Yet what we see must continually pass through the reality of union.

Christ is not standing outside of us giving us information about His Church.

We are in Him, and He is in us.

The prophet’s grace should reveal what is on His heart with such clarity that people are drawn into greater awareness and alignment with Him.

The apostle’s grace should give expression and form to what is in His heart, establishing what allows His nature, order, and purposes to take root and mature among His people.

Different functions. Same source.

And neither can be reduced to spotting problems.

If a prophet becomes more fluent in darkness than in the nature of Christ, something has shifted.

If an apostle becomes more consumed with fixing the Church than revealing the Christ who is building her, something has shifted.

“I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.” Galatians 2:20 (NIV)

That is more than personal identity. It is the ground from which we function.

We do not discern toward Christ.

We do not build toward Christ.

We begin in Christ.

And from that place, revelation becomes an expression of knowing Him, and building becomes an expression of participating with Him.

The Church does not need apostles and prophets who have simply become better at seeing what is wrong with her.

She needs men and women who have beheld Jesus so deeply that what they reveal, establish, confront, and cultivate bears His likeness.

Our clearest sight will always come from beholding Him. #UnionWithChrist by @fearlessrock

“We are not trying to please people but God, who tests our hearts.”

Those words from Paul in 1 Thessalonians 2:4 reveal something important about the inner life of an apostle.

You cannot build what God has sent you to build while allowing the approval of people to govern your obedience.

There will be moments when faithfulness costs you agreement. Moments when obedience is misunderstood. Moments when the easier choice would be to adjust what God has given you so that it is more acceptable to the people around you.

Paul understood that pressure.

But his measure was not whether everyone approved of him. His measure was whether he was faithful to the One who entrusted him with the assignment.

That kind of freedom is formed in the heart long before it is seen in what we build.

This is an excerpt from my newest book in progress, Am I an Apostle? I’m writing about more than the function of the apostle’s grace. I’m going into the formation, character, responsibility, and inner life required to faithfully steward it.

Because before we talk about what apostles build, we need to talk about who they are becoming in Christ.

Recalibration is not Christ looking for reasons to correct us.

It is His grace bringing our lives and leadership into greater agreement with His heart and nature so that He can be seen more clearly through us.

That is the heart of recalibration.

Truth lands differently when it is carried within genuine relationship.

Healthy correction can address what needs to change without reducing someone to their weakest moment. Love remains present while truth does its work.

That posture reflects Christ.

Renewing the mind is much more than replacing negative thoughts with positive ones.

Paul writes in Romans 12:2, “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

That renewal happens within the reality of what Christ has already accomplished.

The old self was crucified with Him. We have been raised with Christ and seated with Him. Our lives are hidden with Christ in God. We have become new creation.

The mind is learning to recognize and agree with a reality it did not create.

This is why identity cannot be reduced to affirmation.

We are not repeatedly telling ourselves something in hopes that eventually it becomes true. The Holy Spirit continually reveals Christ, and as our understanding comes into alignment with Him, the way we interpret ourselves, others, circumstances, authority, calling, and even God begins to change.

Transformation flows from truth becoming understood and embodied.

For those who lead others, this reaches far beyond personal development. We cannot consistently lead people into a reality we still primarily understand as information.

Truth has to become the place from which we live.

The renewed mind increasingly recognizes what heaven has already established in Christ.

Whatever Christ brings into the light, He meets with grace.

His examination is an invitation into greater healing, freedom, and alignment with Him. And the fruit doesn't stop with us. The people we love and lead experience the difference too.

Kingdom leadership cannot be measured only by what grows around us.

Attendance, reach, opportunities, momentum, and visibility may reflect movement, but they do not tell the whole story.

Paul writes in Galatians 4:19 about Christ being formed in people. In plain language, he was looking for the life of Christ to become evident in how they lived, loved, thought, discerned, and responded.

That is a very different measure of fruit.

The grace on a leader's life is meant to serve what Christ is producing in His people. The goal is not simply a larger room, a stronger platform, or greater influence. It is a people whose lives increasingly reveal Him.

That kind of fruit can be present long before it becomes impressive.

And it can be absent even when everything appears successful.

Christ remains the measure.

Before the assignment, there was belonging.

Before there was anything to build, there was the reality of being His.

No amount of responsibility changes the foundation. We lead, build, and serve as sons and daughters who are already loved and already belong.

There is always more to discover in Christ.

He keeps revealing, teaching, healing, and drawing us into deeper alignment with Himself. The finished work is complete, yet our understanding and expression of that reality continue to deepen.

Our transformation is part of the building.
