In the last three months, Meta has made two major moves that have raised serious concerns about the rights and protections of artists and creators.

In July, Meta introduced a feature connecting public Instagram content to its AI image-generation tools, sparking outrage among artists who feared their work could be used to generate new images without their permission. Following widespread backlash, Meta reversed course within days. Now, just three months later, we’re facing another controversy over Meta’s updated terms and what they could mean for creators’ intellectual property, including content they put on their own website! Once again, artists spoke out. Once again, Meta made changes. But the larger issue remains.

For many artists, leaving these platforms isn’t a simple choice. We’ve spent years building communities, connecting with collectors, sharing our work, and growing our livelihoods here. Walking away can mean losing access to the very people who support what we do.

And yet, staying shouldn’t mean surrendering our rights.

Artists, musicians, photographers, writers, and creators are not just users of these platforms. Our creativity, our stories, and our work are a huge part of what makes people use these platforms in the first place.

We deserve to have that work respected. We deserve transparency. And we deserve a meaningful say in how our intellectual property is used.

As Meta’s updated terms take effect, I’m joining other creators in going dark for one week. Please consider standing with us.
