Serendipity 3: the New York restaurant that turned chance into an address

Do you plan every detail of your trips?

A restaurant that opened in 1954 proves some of the best travel discoveries are not on the itinerary.

Since then, Serendipity 3 has mixed food, art and eccentric decor on the Upper East Side. Lamps, objects and colors with no commitment to a single aesthetic made it one of New York’s most singular addresses. Its name comes from a Persian tale. In 1754, English writer Horace Walpole coined the word serendipity, inspired by “The Three Princes of Serendip,” in which the heroes make happy discoveries they were not looking for. Number 3 echoes both the princes and the three founding friends: Stephen Bruce, Calvin Holt and Patch Carradine.

🎬 In 2001, the film “Serendipity” took the restaurant worldwide. Andy Warhol, Marilyn Monroe and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis are also linked to the address.

🍫 Signature item: the Frrrozen Hot Chocolate (yes, three r’s), a cold, creamy chocolate drink topped with generous whipped cream.

In a world of minimalism, excess is the charm. Sophistication is not always restraint.

💬 What is the best discovery you ever made without planning? Tell us in the comments.

📍 Milan

Brussels set the template for covered iron-and-glass galleries in 1847, but Milan made it a symbol.

In her column "Milan and the Dream of Building a Sky," Fernanda Artibani shows how Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, designed by Giuseppe Mengoni after Italy's unification, was born as an architectural manifesto rather than a simple commercial passage.

Set between Milan's Duomo and Teatro alla Scala, a glass dome above its central octagon earned the gallery a nickname: Il Salotto di Milano, Milan's living room.

To Artibani, these domes have little to do with fashion, shopping or tourism. They express an ancestral desire to stay connected to light, even in the heart of a city.

📍 Marrakech, Morocco

MARRAKECH, Morocco — A city built from contradictions unfolds across our latest Lifestyle & Travel feature.

Terracotta walls hide bursts of color inside every mosque, riad and hotel. Zellige mosaics turn simple tiles into geometric works of art, each piece cut and placed by hand. The Koutoubia Mosque's minaret has guided the city for more than eight centuries, while the medina's 9,000 alleys invite visitors to simply get lost.

Beyond the visuals, attay tells its own story. Moroccan tea is poured high above the glass to create foam, a small ceremony that turns any encounter into a gesture of hospitality.

Ancient and contemporary, chaotic and serene, Marrakech proves that its greatest beauty lies precisely in its contradictions.

🌋 Ischia, Italy

Nobody talks about this island, and that might be its biggest luxury.

Fernanda Altibani makes her debut in the Lifestyle & Travel column with a destination that skips the obvious choices: a volcanic island where sand hits 212°F and thermal pools rise straight from the seafloor, free and open year-round.

🇮🇹 Ischia, Italy

DEBUT: FERNANDA ARTIBANI JOINS THE LIFESTYLE & TRAVEL COLUMN

Starting today, Arch Gallery & Design Magazine welcomes a new voice. Fernanda Altibani makes her debut in the Lifestyle & Travel column with a destination that skips the obvious choices: Ischia, the largest island in the Gulf of Naples.

"Tired of seeing the same destinations pop up again and again in everyone's feed, I went looking for a place that still held some surprise," Fernanda says about choosing her debut story.

Located in the Campania region, in southern Italy, Ischia lives in the shadow of Capri and the Amalfi Coast. Roughly 62,000 residents share the island's cobblestone streets, quiet beaches and centuries-old traditions, far from the mass tourism that floods its neighbors.

🏰 Visitors arriving by ferry spot the Aragonese Castle first, built atop a volcanic islet and connected to town by a narrow stone bridge. It once housed about 2,000 families and functioned as a fully walled town, complete with churches, convents, an abbey and vineyards.

Born from underwater eruptions more than 150,000 years ago, Ischia is a volcanic island whose dormant volcano has not erupted since 1302. Its heat, however, remains present: in certain spots on the island, sand can reach temperatures close to 212 degrees Fahrenheit, letting residents and chefs bury food in the hot ground for slow, natural cooking, following a tradition passed down for generations.

Sorgeto Bay's thermal springs rise straight from the seafloor. Hot volcanic water mixes with saltwater to form natural pools with temperatures that shift throughout the day, turning the cove into an open-air hot tub, free and open year-round.

Weathered facades, colorful boats, Vespas parked outside centuries-old houses: Fernanda describes an unpretentious beauty, one that wasn't built for social media and impresses precisely because of that.

Congratulations, Fernanda. May the Lifestyle & Travel column keep uncovering the world beyond the obvious.
