Streams are the number everyone posts, and they matter. But they don’t tell you if people came back on their own. Check your save rate, your share of active listeners and your streams per listener too.

A tip: 75% of a song’s first-year streams reportedly come after month one, so don’t judge a release by its launch week. by @feature.fm

There’s no fixed “per-stream rate.” Streaming services put subscription and ad money into a pot each month, and you’re paid by your share of all streams. Paid listeners, the country a stream comes from and your distributor deal all change what a stream is worth.

74% of independent artists made less than $1,000 from music last year. If that’s you, you’re not alone.

@dittomusic surveyed 5,039 indie artists in 112 countries for its 2026 Independent Music Report. 82% can’t afford to tour, and only 22% live on their music income alone.

Knowing who your fans are is what brings them to shows, merch and presales. Collect their contact info on every release so you can reach them directly next time.

Some fans might not hear your next release for three days.

Spotify is testing Premium Early Access in India: on selected new releases, Premium subscribers can stream on day one, while free listeners wait up to 72 hours. It’s opt-in, set by artists and their labels, and follows UMG’s move in July to put its biggest India releases behind a paywall for the first 72 hours.

It’s one market for now. But if windows spread, “release day” becomes release week. Plan your promo across the first few days, and build your own list of fans before you drop. by @feature.fm
