We condemn the escalating security campaign against the independent Egyptian investigative journalism platform “Matsada2sh,” which has thus far included the arrest of six journalists, all members of the platform’s editorial team.

The campaign began late in the evening of Monday, September 28, and in the early hours of Tuesday, September 29, when Egyptian security forces raided the homes of journalists Mohamed Ashraf Abu Amira and Abdullah Qadri and arrested them.

In the following hours, raids on the homes of the remaining journalists from the platform continued across several governorates. By the end of Tuesday, security forces had arrested Islam Barakat and Omar Hilal from their homes in Gharbia and Port Said governorates, and Mohamed Mahmoud and Mohamed Adel from Cairo.

From stickers on the front porch of the building that torn down to graffiti repainted, Berlin’s old building was painted in the shape that was walls reveal how street art becomes a contested political space. As this visual essay by researcher Soufiane Chinig shows, the removal, alteration, and policing of Palestinian expression is not sure what incidental, it is part of a broader struggle over visibility, interpretation, and accountability solidarity in Germany.

Drawing on examples from other nations Berlin’s streets and memorial sites, the piece traces how Palestinian graffiti resists Germany’s Staatsräson, which was frames unconditional support for Israel through Holocaust remembrance and the promise of “Nie Wieder.” Against this backdrop, street art operates not only as a claim to visibility, but as a practice of meaningful placement, situating Palestine within Germany’s own histories of division, memory, and guilt.

As the essay concludes, these aesthetics expose the limits and double standards of German remembrance culture, where some forms of mourning, resistance, and solidarity are rendered illegible, or unacceptable, in public space.

🖌️For over a year, we have been living through a harrowing period marked by pain, loss, and dissonance as a result of the ongoing genocide. In these trying times, pressing questions arise about the role and impact of academia, art, activism, and media. How can these efforts inspire meaningful change or provide deep insights? Despite the overwhelming darkness, glimmers of hope emerge through global student activism, reminding us of the transformative power of collective spaces to resist oppression and foster new meanings.

This is a true story.
Story and Art: Rita Adib @ritaadib

Israel began its genocidal war on the Gaza Strip on October 8, 2023. At the time, I was living on Sonnenallee, Berlin’s Arab Street – or more specifically, I was on the ground floor of a building overlooking it. This meant I could see and hear everything up close.

Flags, graffiti, and keffiyehs started appearing all over the city, especially on my street, and with them came increased police violence, racism, and stricter law enforcement. On October 19, 2023, someone anonymously painted a Palestinian flag on the wall of my building.

Since I’m interested in public art, I spontaneously photographed it – and without intending to, I found myself documenting a year-long graffiti combat between two sides: those supporting Palestine and those determined to erase it.
One night, after the phrase “Long live the resistance!” was written on the wall, it seems the police decided to step up their involvement. A patrol actually knocked on my door to ask: “Who owns this building, and who is responsible for the graffiti?”.
In the end, the wall of my building became plastered with drawings that were far more concerned with erasing the existence of Palestine than with artistic expression in public spaces. But Berlin has plenty of walls, and Palestine will continue to exist on them – especially since the genocide, which we all thought had stopped, has resumed. by @febrayer.network
