After a long winter, this session gave us space to reconnect, recharge, and remember the power of coming together.

Check this out! We were on BBC Points West last night talking about the Bristol Food Education Charter, the result of a year’s Participatory Research with @universityofbristol and @thechildrenskitchenbristol @feeding.bristol We engaged with 100s of children and young people to find out what they think is important to learn about food, and where and how they learn best. This will be shared to schools and community settings-anyone who works with children and young people who wants to improve access to food education in the city. To see the charter, sign up and access resources visit the @feeding.bristol website. by @feeding.bristol

This week we celebrated the launch of the Bristol Food Education Charter at Felix Road Adventure Playground, where sushi making was a highlight! 🍣

Here Nadrin, Atikah and Tasnim tell us about their experience of making sushi, what food they like to eat most, and what food they want to learn to make. If you’re interested in knowing more about what children want to learn about food, then look no further than the Charter.

The Bristol Food Education Charter is a set of eight demands from children and young people about what they want to learn about food, putting Children’s voices at the heart of shaping better food education for Bristol.

Schools, youth settings and community groups are invited to sign up and commit to four pledges that make food education meaningful, inclusive and relevant - from cooking and eating together to letting young people lead the conversation.

This work has been developed by Feeding Bristol’s The Children’s Kitchen and the University of Bristol.

Learn more about the Charter and pledge your support now via Feeding Bristol’s website! by @feeding.bristol

Last Thursday, @themaziproject and @feeding.bristol co-hosted an event where food was the lens to show solidarity with the people of Palestine.

We wanted to honour riches of Palestinian culture as spoken through its flavours and recipes, raise funds for an organisation that supports land workers and families through food and advocacy (@uawcpal), while also making the space to discuss how the starvation in Gaza is a product of decades of colonialism in practice.

From the erasure of memory through recipe appropriation to the dispossession of farmland, from the destruction of ecosystems to the dismantling of vital food security infrastructure, food has been at the core of the Israeli state’s strategy to strip Palestinian people of their land and culture since 1948.

Palestinians have also used food as a way to embed their resistance and survival, and it can be a powerful tool for solidarity, too. The panel explored some of these food actions for Palestine:

💵 Boycott Israeli goods – join the BAFZ campaign
🫒 Support Palestinian businesses and those boycotting Israeli products
🥘 Cook and share Palestinian recipes
🥗 Host and attend fundraising supper clubs
🥖Break bread and keep talking about Palestine
🤝Connect with community through food - isolation is the companion of despair!

You can read more about the event in a recent Substack post – follow link on @feeding.bristol’s profile

This event was only made possible from the contributions from dozens of people volunteering their time – chefs, speakers, servers, helpers and stall organisers. An enormous thank you to
@jafra_kitchen @amygsymonds @bristolafz @dr_michal_nahman Petra Pollock @palestinemuseumbristol ❤️🤍🖤💚

Who are @uawcpal?

The Union of Agricultural Work Committees (UAWC) is a Palestinian non-governmental agricultural development organisation. They support Palestinian farmers through:

🌾 Strengthening food sovereignty

🚰 Advocating for land and water rights

👩🏽‍🌾Improving rural women’s livelihoods

🚚 Coordinating emergency response programs

UAWC’s Stop Gaza Starvation emergency appeal seeks to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and Area C of the West Bank. They are providing urgent assistance including food parcels, hygiene supplies, clean water, blankets, and shelter materials. The appeal also seeks international pressure to restore aid access, protect agricultural lands, and halt the destruction of infrastructure and food systems.

According to @uawcpal (citing FAO/UN-OSAT data), since October 2023 approximately 95% of agricultural land in Gaza has been destroyed or damaged. Only 5% of arable land remains intact and farms, greenhouses, irrigation networks, trees and livestock have largely been obliterated. Targeting Gaza’s food insecurity infrastructure has been integral to the Israeli government’s engineered famine of the Palestinian people.

Join us on October 9th for an evening honouring Palestinian food and agriculture and discussing how we use food as a tool for solidarity 🍉
