Today we are behind the iron curtain in Russia visiting family 🇷🇺 One thing I like about Russia is they’ve got all these outdoor gyms scattered all over the city. It’s part of the way many Soviet neighbourhoods were designed. apartment blocks built around shared courtyards with playgrounds, sports courts, schools and community spaces, so people could exercise close to home. Instead of driving to a gym, you can often just walk downstairs. It’s a simple bit of city planning that keeps public spaces active and encourages people of all ages to get outside. Now, this one I’m at is on Krestovsky Island, which is one of the wealthier parts of St. Petersburg, so it’s definitely nicer than most. But you’ll find outdoor gyms in neighbourhoods all across Russia. The neighbourhood layouts mostly date back to the Soviet era, while much of the fitness equipment itself was installed or upgraded in the 2000s and 2010s. taken in Krestovsky Island by @feelgoodbuzz

Colombia’s traffic lights are a stage for a lot of people trying to make a living. With unemployment and informal work still a reality for many here, you’ll often see people busking, juggling selling things at the lights or performing between red lights for a few pesos. This guy was doing it all with one arm, That’s the attitude bro 🫡

Rush hour on the Amazon.

This whole part of the Amazon is extremely isolated. Leticia and Tabatinga aren’t connected by road to the rest of Colombia or Brazil. So if you want to get people or supplies in and out, it’s basically by air or by river.

I’ve always found Soviet city planning cool. In the 1950s, huge numbers of standardized apartment blocks were built to tackle the housing shortage. But what I really like is how convenient these neighbourhoods are. Schools, kindergartens, shops, parks, public transport, all ridiculously close.
