Acne treatment varies depending on the TYPE of acne. Follow #feelinmyskin_acne series to find out WHAT is going on & pick THE RIGHT treatment🙌
⠀
Start with figuring out whether acne is inflamed or non-inflamed (or both😅)
⠀
NON-INFLAMED Grade1 acne is hard to the touch with no to little redness & doesn’t hurt:
⠀
🔸 CLOSED COMEDONES (whiteheads) = sebum&keratin mixture plugs the pilosebaceous orifice (a hair follicle “tube” that leads to the skin surface) BELOW the skin surface - follicle opening is closed➡️everything collects under the surface forming a skin-colored/white bump
🔸 OPEN COMEDONES (referred to as blackheads, though not always black) happen when sebum & corneocytes plug the pilosebaceous orifice (again, that “tube”) ON the skin surface - follicle opening is, well, open, thus the plug is visible to the eye.
⠀
❗️Don’t confuse open comedones with SEBACEOUS FILAMENTS which are NOT acne lesions, but merely tiny oil deposits in the opening of a hair follicle. Unlike blackheads, they are not raised (no texture) & look like tiny dark dots, often present on noses. It’s just an overproduction of sebum from a follicle, not a clog. Attempts to extract them can lead to broken capillaries & the sebum will just reoccur the next day - those are simply a normal part of oilier skin
⠀
INFLAMED acne hurts to the touch, is accompanied by redness & can be filled with pus:
🔻Grade2 PAPULES -hard, inflamed red/pink bumps
🔻Grade3 PUSTULES (“pimples”) - like papules, but filled with pus, forming a white/yellow center. Pus = protein-rich fluid & white blood cells sent there to fight infection caused by bacteria. Can leave PIH (brown) or PIE (red) marks behind
🔻Grade4 NODULES & CYSTS formed by MULTIPLE papules/pustules that reside DEEPER in the skin. Unlike nodules, cysts are filled with pus, making them softer. Nodules are harder & can take weeks to disappear. Yes, they hurt like a !@#$. Not only can they leave PIH/PIE behind, but also scarring, especially if messed with & violently extracted
⠀
How do they progress & is there a way to cut it off at the very beginning? Like to get it in the next post😊❤️Also, which one of those have you experienced? (I honestly had ALL)😣 by @feelinmyskin

How to add in niacinamide to make sure you’re not layering too many products (can cause clogging & sensitization) & use the right concentration for your skin?
⠀
❗️Niacinamide is more of a helper (can-do-it-all) ingredient - meaning, it’s quite enough to have it at <5% concentration in a sunscreen/moisturizer/hydrating serum. It’s tolerated best at such smaller concentrations & you don’t exactly NEED to have it as a separate 10% serum.
⠀
If you have such serum though, consider it one of the main active ingredients in your routine, not just a “small” helper.
⠀
🧜Remember, it’s always best to use max 3 active ingredients in your routine, preferably on separate days. If you’re a pro & you know what your skin can handle - do you😉
⠀
🧚If you don’t know how &/or your skin is on the sensitive side - less is more, use actives on separate days & add in break days (see our post on Break Days)
⠀
Pick a retinoid/acid exfoliant/other acid (f.e. azelaic) to accompany niacinamide (it’s better to pick just one) or simply treat that 10% niacinamide as your one & only active ingredient in the routine.
⠀
The basic routine consists of:
1️⃣cleanser
2️⃣hydrator
3️⃣moisturizer
4️⃣sunscreen.. and adding a 10% niacinamide serum to that may be just enough for your skin.
⠀
Most people tolerate niacinamide well, but often people who jump into using 10% without easing in can experience redness & acne-like red lesions on the skin. Do you need to toss the product into the bin if that’s your experience?
⠀
Not really. You can:
🔹See if any of your products already contain niacinamide & don’t use them on days you use the 10% one.
⠀
🔹Instead of applying 3 drops to your bare face, try adding one drop (every few days) to your hydrating serum or moisturizer.
⠀
🔹If you’re using other actives (BHA/AHA, retinoids, vit C) - try using niacinamide on the days you don’t use those.
⠀
🔹Avoid areas that experience irritation. F.e. if your cheeks get red - just apply diluted niacinamide on your jawline
⠀
🌟MAIN TAKE-AWAYS:
🌀use it less often (even once/twice a week)
🌀dilute one drop with other products
🌀give your skin a break.

What’s your experience with niacinamide?😊💬 by @feelinmyskin

SF are not blackheads, but the visual representation of how sebum exits your hair follicles in the more oilier parts of your face.
⠀
Even if you force SF out, they will refill in the next 30 days (usually quicker) since no one stopped your sebum flow😉
⠀
DON’T:
❌Squeeze them
❌Dig your nails/tools to force them out
❌Steam your face
❌Pore strips=trash bin
❌Clay masks=dehydrated skin=more prominent SFs
⠀
WHY?
💯Repeated pressure weakens the capillaries (blood vessels) in the area, which with time results in dilated/broken capillaries which cannot be treated with skincare, but more so with laser/radiofrequency procedures
💯Digging into the pore can result in ice pick scarring - again, no skincare product can treat that
⠀
DO:
✔️Accept your skin❤️SFs are A NORMAL part of every skin. Don't let facetuned, blurred photos fool you - those are unrealistic representations of what THE REAL skin looks like
✔️You can’t get rid of them permanently (they are just how your skin NORMALLY works), but you can diminish the appearance by using:
🔹1-2% salicylic acid (lipid-soluble acid) which exfoliates the pore lining
OR
🔹4-10% lactic/mandelic acid
❗️If you have sensitive skin/rosacea/inflamed acne/other condition, consult acid usage with a professional, otherwise build up a small % acid from once to 2-3 times a week, if tolerated❗️
✔️Consider recurring treatments: mild acid peels, microdermabrasion or cavitation peeling ( but don’t let them dig the cavitation peeling tool into your nose with fool force - that’s a MISUSE of it - it should lightly glide on your wet skin as it exfoliates it using ultrasonic vibrations)
✔️Wash your face with a gentle cleanser for 60 seconds, add a washcloth/konjac sponge once a week
✔️Keep your skin hydrated: apply moisturizers to damp skin, add an additional hydrating/antioxidant serum in between if needed
✔️Consider retinoids: vit A (retinol), derivatives
✔️Niacinamide: no need to shoot for 10% (that can result in redness/bumps), even 4% in your moisturizer/sunscreen is enough
✔️THE MOST effective: a DAILY sunscreen
