August 20th, Simon, cinnamon bun, my handsome baby boy, left us. He came from a bush in Staten Island on my birthday, September 23, 2009, the only tuxedo cat and the runt of the litter. He was so sick and young that the vet said to “not be surprised if he doesn’t make it”. I was just starting high school and here I was, bottle feeding a kitten and doing skin to skin. He grew up to be HUGE and LONG. He was with me through high school, college, every job, the move to Queens, and all my pain and illnesses.

Simon developed hyperthyroidism when he was around 15 years old. He was never healthy enough to receive the I-313 treatment, he tried the pills (“good boy medicine time!”, transdermal, and two forms of liquid Methimazole. Frequent bloodwork, Solensia for his arthritis, IV fluids and vitamins became our life.

He was almost 17 (maybe already was, he was a stray). I sang him Happy Birthday and Sto Lat “100 years, let us live 100 years”, which made the reality sink in.

Simon was more than my first cat. He is truly my soul cat. There is a stillness and silence at home. Lila and Sylvester, my two cats who grew up with him, are still not the same after his passing.
Who knew a little blue eyed stray kitten would grow up to be my whole world.

2020...life is a most beautiful pain. Balancing my store with the remnants of school I have left came with overwork and exhaustion. My health got better only to fall so much harder.
