I’m currently reading @brianeno’s A Year with Swollen Appendices, his diary from 1995. I just came across this question:
“Is the act of getting attention a sufficient act for an artist? Or is that, in fact, the job description? Perhaps the art of the future will be indistinguishable.”

I find myself asking that question more often than ever these days.

I’ve really been struggling with social media. What I want is for people to experience my work the way I hope they might in real life—with that childhood sense of discovery, of stumbling onto something unexpected. I’ve never quite figured out how to translate that feeling into an algorithm, and I don’t have much desire to try. I’m too busy making things to be making things about the things I make.

My creative ecosystem is delicate. I work hard to find inspiration in ways that feel authentic, and I often feel the algorithm pulls in the opposite direction.

In any case, here you go, Brian. I’m trying to do my “job” by posting my latest oeuvre: “Tea Party in Venice”, inspired by my recent trip to Venice (see previous post). It began over Bellinis at Caffè Florian, as we tried to process what we had just experienced at Palazzo Pisani Moretta: The Only True Protest Is Beauty.

Forget #2016, I’m time-traveling all the way back to 1986, when I was an impressionable teen browsing the pavilions at EXPO 86 in Vancouver. The most memorable moment for me was the discovery of John Lennon’s psychedelic Roll’s Royce Phantom V on display. It was painted by artist Steve Weaver, who used Romany decorative arts motifs and art nouveau swirls to transform the original “upper crust” identity of the Rolls Royce into a symbol of the counterculture.

It’s amazing to look back at the moments in your life that prove to be pivotal. This experience left an indelible mark on me and my work. Identity and transformation continue to be central to my oeuvre.

Palm Springs - what a whirlwind❣️ I assembled my latest sculpture, “Jana”, in the FAM Shop at the exceptionally unique emporium @shopmarketmarket. Stay tuned as my bricolage vision comes together for a cohesive and PLAYful shopping experience 👄👌🏻

Jana, like Janus, is a Roman Deity who symbolizes transitions from youth to adulthood; beginnings and endings; spatial transitions such as gates, arches and doorways; and looks to the future and the past, which is why we named the month of January in honor of them. I think it is timely to channel their wisdom as we find our world in an incredible state of transition and flux.
