You have heard about Haitian Konpa! But do you know Haitian Jazz?
.
There is many legendary Haitian Jazz artists: Lionel Benjamin, Alix Jacques, Frantz Dugue…
.
But here is the one you need to know:
.
Caribbean Sextet is a legendary Haitian jazz-fusion band founded in 1976 by pianist @reginald.policard after leaving Ibo Combo. Known for blending Konpa rhythm with latin jazz, throwing in funk and soul, they stood example for an irresistible merge of sounds rarely achieved thereafter.
.
Disbanding after 7 albums, the might not have been around for long, yet their impact and musical value cannot be overstated.
.
This is Caribbean Sextet with ā€žTante Niniā€œ
.
If you want to learn more about music follow @33konpa , @dakenpro and @orlandooo7 .

.
Here are my 5 favorite tracks of a set I recommend for your Friday sundown with a Ti Punch in your hands.
.
.
Experience 7 - Alamandha
.
Incredible kadans rooting from the beautiful island of Guadeloupe šŸ‡¬šŸ‡µ. Experience 7 has many legendary albums and almost all of their releases would feature incredibly well crafted songs like this one. Thanks to @patouhoullier for keeping the legend alive.
.
Ramiro Naka - Tchon Tchoma
.
Eclectic Gumbe sounds from Guinea Bissau by the one and only king of the Gumbé @ramiro_naka . Other stand out tracks on this album include the addicting Rabo de Padja. Thanks to @carlosrene.mx for introducing this record to me.
.
Serge Régent - Awété
.
Hard to find early 90s Zouk by Serge Régent. Mesmerizing compositions (the entire A side is almost perfect), accompanied by soft lyrics. Provided by the one and only @nicolas_skliris
.
Challenger’s - Pati Epiw
.
Another Zouk highlight for me. The entire album is great - another favorite would be ā€žAleĢā€œ for sure Produced by zouktv founder @emmanuelgranier and the legend @harry_diboula_officiel . Sadly the duo - @bussymarcmiche & Enetteā€˜s only release.
.
Max Cilla - La flûte des mornes
.
Slowing it down with Martinique’s iconic flutist Max Cilla. Max Cilla is one of the most prolific artist of the island, combining gwo ka with jazz and producing a timeless masterpiece showcasing the island’s rich musical landscape. Please watch @petites___planetes great documentary where he visited Cilla last year in France.

6 years ago I asked you to become my wife. While the question was the easiest that ever fell over my lips, the circumstances that accompanied it were more than just a challenge.
.
From planning to close an almost 2,5 year long distance relationship to knowing only a few days before the scheduled day whether the closely monitored Covid regulations would allow our plans to materialize.
.
With all these years, times changed. They were often dictated by moves, went hand in hand with Hellos and Goodbyes and all the other hectic realities attached to my life. And quite frankly: these changes were many.
.
And yet you made them feel easy. Because in all the uncertainty that comes along with them, you always were the constant pillar that carried the roof of a home that would just be four loose walls without you.
.
As you are far away right now and as I miss you a little extra today, I want you to know that I am forever grateful to you for choosing me.
.
Happy 6 years @estepahni ā¤ļø

How did Gabon’s First Lady become an international Popstar?
.
This is Ep. 1 of Crossroads - where we explore career defining moments of Global Grove stars
.
Let’s talk about Joséphine Bongo. Born in 1941 in Brazzaville, Marie-Joséphine grew up surrounded by music—accordion, guitar, voices filling the room.
.
She started singing early, in church choirs and traditional settings of the Bateke people. Music was always there. Just not yet center stage.
.
Then life took a turn. She married Omar Bongo in 1959—and by 1967, she was First Lady of Gabon. Politics, power, public life. She co-founded a ruling party, supported women’s rights and children’s causes, and even led a political-cultural band called Kounabeli. A performer, but within the system.
.
Until it became too much. In 1986, she divorced. No official explanation—but the weight of political life and her husband’s polygamy likely played their part. Either way, everything changed.
.
Her career hit a crossroads. So she chose herself. Reinventing completely, she became Patience Dabany—stepping into the spotlight on her own terms. From the late 80s on, she released a string of records blending Afro-funk, boogie, soukous, and pop. Not a side project. A full second act. And honestly? It worked. Her later life hasn’t been without controversy—but her music from that era still hits. Warm, rhythmic, and quietly confident. The sound of someone reclaiming their voice.
.
This is ā€œDis-Moiā€ by Patience Dabany.
.
A track that feels like Janet Jackson wandered into Central Africa… and decided to stay.
.
.
For a set of interesting reissues of music from Gabon, check out @secousse.radio who released a couple of very interestingly compiled albums.

5 Essential African Records!
.
.
Bill Loko – Africa Wake Up
.
Incredibily rhythmic Makossa from the legendary Bill Loko. Overviewed by Michot Dhin and featuring the talents of Tito Puente, this is one of the easier to get releases of Bill Loko. Get your copy from discogs, while still available.
.
.
Dizzy K. – Be a Friend
.
Rich Nigerian Boogie stemming from the 1980s Lagos. Featuring the masterclass of Nkono teles, who gave the tracks a slick synth polish rarely found elsewhere. Often overlooked record with the go to track Omoge. Check out @afrowanted or @monorecordsla for great selections from West Africa
.
.
Ousmane Kouyate – Révélation 82
.
Heavy Mandingo Funk coming from the iconic Guinean guitarist Ousmane Kouyaté who revolutionized the Guinean music scene in the beginning of the 1980s with only two official releases. Very hard to get nowadays but worth the purchase alone for Ny’y. Check out a beautifully crafted re-issue by @analogafricarecords who released some of his best known tracks.
.
.
Mansany – Mansany
.
Funk/Soul/ Spiritual Zouk with Jazz elements? The supergroup crafted by Amadou Doukoure and Abdoulaye Soumare might have only one release but this one hits hard. Sung largely in Wolof and issued on the American/ Ivorian label Eboni, Mansany’s record is a glimpse into the record industry in West African CoĢ‚te d’Ivoire in the 1980s. For more recommendations stemming from CoĢ‚te d’Ivoire check out @baoulecore
.
.
Bebe Manga – Ami – Oyomiya
.
Closing with one of the most iconic tracks from Cameroon. Soul – Funk – Disco. Great crossover record by the legendary Bebe Manga. Still easy to get.
.

.
With ā€žTrésors Haïtiensā€œ I want to express my deep love for the musical landscape of my favorite Caribbean island Haiti. Frontrunner of Zouk evolving from Konpa Direk, but as well home to Twoubadou and Mini-Djazz amongst incredible Latin Jazz crossovers. A truly stunning musical affair!
.
I want to take this moment to highlight the rich musical culture of this beautiful pearl of the Caribbean.

This is Rhythm Revolution!
.
We all know that Africa gave birth to Latin music. But did you know that Latin music came home?
.
For centuries, rhythm traveled Westward across the Atlantic through the African diaspora. Then, in the 1930s, the current reversed. In the midst of the Great Depression, record companies were desperate for new markets. Labels like Viktor and Gramophone repackaged their catalogues for a new destination: Africa.
.
78-rpm vinyls crossed the ocean and dominated the dance floor, especially ā€œEl Maniseroā€ by Moises Simon,
.
Viktor’s G.V. series reshaped West and Central Africa’s music scene. Radio stations like Radio Congolia broadcast Cuban and Caribbean music into public spaces, where local musicians studied every bass line, horn arrangement, and clave pattern.
.
Cuban rumba and son, Brazilian Samba de Roda, Trinidadian calypso — all landed on African soil. It’s particular impact on the Democratic Republic of Congo gave birth to Congolese Rumba.
.
What traveled wasn’t just rhythms and harmonies, but instruments as well. In Ghana, drummer Guy Warren introduced Afro-Cuban percussion into highlife bands, blending Latin soul with local traditions. As Salif Keita later said: I consider a duty to all Malians to love Cuban music because it’s through Cuban music that we were introduced to modern instruments.
.
After the independence wave, the connection deepened. Fidel Castro’s Cuba became a cultural and political reference for newly sovereign African nations.
.
One of the clearest examples was Gambian salsero Labah Sosseh. Rising from Senegal’s Star Band de Dakar, Sosseh absorbed Afro-Caribbean structures, carried them to New York, and eventually performed in Cuba alongside the very creators of the style. The Atlantic circuit was complete.

Africa shaped Latin America. Latin America reshaped Africa.
.
For more info on the great Laba Sosseh, watch Maky Madiba Syllaā€˜s documentary on the artistā€˜s life. For great music recommendations from the region, check out @archive_armand @afro.sunny and @torobee_distribution
