My challenge chosen for the program was a friction fire (bow drill) which I have had many successes in the past. After a full 24 hours, minimal sleep and food, and a lot of work, I did not have the energy to maintain a steady pace. I also notice my form was all over the place.

This just goes to show even though you practice under good conditions with success does not mean you can do it under harsh conditions.

Part of survival is knowing what is available to you including your energy. How much of that you use in trade off of something that may benefit your situation is always something to consider prior to action.

The location I was in had very limited bows and of quality which was a challenge to fill in my shelter and bedding to provide enough insulation. Just before crawling into bed it started to snow which I then realzed I had many holes. Trying to patch it the best I could I had to pull out the space blanket and use that to fill in all the gaps which also aided in retaining the heat from my fire.

Part way into my build my saw decided to break on me which resulted in reassessing my resources and functionality to make it through the night. Even though you feel prepared and have a plan its good practice to be quick on your feet, keep a strong moral and use what is available to you. To me that is true survival.

Part of my program we went out at -20 °C to survive the night mimicing a survival situation being left in the field. Assessing my set up I noticed the main tree I was building off of was a standing dead so I had to change my shelter position. With that late into the night it started to snow as the wind picked up resulting in some quick action to construct a roof which help a little but it did aid in keeping my fire stronger and warmer. Life has a funny way of balancing its self out.

It has been about 5 years since my last shelter build (little rusty). Part of my program we went out at -20 °C to survive the night mimicing a survival situation being left in the field. As part of the scenario I decided to remain solo instead of a group activity along with limited resources. Lets just say the winter aspect was a challenge in itself. It was a great experience with some new skills to fine tune, im eager to get back out there again!

Story time🙃 SET GOALS! Its been a tough few years reconditioning myself with almost a year of physio, trial and errors, having so many doubts (rethinking my career/hobbies). Each step of the way was a big hill to climb and to reach my goals I had to keep climbing one mountain after another.

I dont have many friends, a lot of money, or the strongest body. I keep to myself most of the time and focus on what I need to do to progress. Im not beating myself down comparing myself to what others have, im comparing to where I used to be.

When I first started physio I laughed in disbelief and was so intimidated at what must be done. Sometimes it gets worse before it gets better. Keeping records of everything I've done over this time has really reinforced my motivation to keep going. That first step is a cake walk compared to now but at that time it was the hardest step I had to make. Being able to look back Im amazed of how far I've come.

Whatever you are struggling with, make small goals. It will be hard at first but eventually you will be able to look back on the progress and be proud of where you are.
