While this itinerary feels particularly appropriate for an October day trip, it’s actually great to do any time of the year. And you don’t even have to be a Stranger Things fan to appreciate it!

All of these spots are in Rome, Georgia, which is about an hour and a half drive from Atlanta. On our visit, we drove by and stopped briefly at the beautiful Second Empire/Gothic Victorian home that served as the Creel House on the show. The home was originally built in 1882 and was a bed and breakfast for a time. It’s privately owned, so you can’t enter the property, but you can see it from the public sidewalk or the street.

Next, we drove about ten minutes to lovely Berry College. The Ford Complex at Berry College is where the Pennhurst Mental Hospital scenes from Stranger Things were filmed. These Gothic buildings were built in the 1920s and 30s after Henry and Clara Ford became benefactors of the school. The architect drew his inspiration from Christ Church College at Oxford University, so you’ll see vaulted walkways, bell towers, leaded glass windows, and formal courtyards with reflecting pools. These buildings are lovely!

Finally, to end our visit, we did one of the many hikes available to visitors of the Berry campus. Berry owns an incredible 27,000 acres of land, making it the largest contiguous college campus in the world. It has more than 88 miles of hiking, biking and equestrian trails! We hiked the Berry Reservoir Trail, which is a flat 2.6-mile out-and- back trail that starts and ends at the Old Mill, a historic mill building and waterwheel from 1936.

Share this Georgia day-trip itinerary with the person you’d like to go with!

Last October, we experienced horse racing at Keeneland’s Fall Meet for the first time. It was a wet, windy day, but the weather didn’t dampen my mood one bit.

We’ve watched steeplechases many times here in Georgia, but this was my first regular horse race at a track. And to see it at Keeneland, a historic Kentucky track, was such a treat.

Before going to Keeneland, I really had no idea how it all worked. I learned that there’s a Fall Meet that runs through the month of October and a Spring Meet that happens in April. The races take place Wednesdays through Sundays.

By the time I figured out that the Fall Meet was going on while we were going to be in town, the only tickets left were general admission, which cost between $7 and $15 per person. And it turned out that general admission tickets were all we needed.

We had a blast watching the horses in the paddock and in the post parade, standing next to the starting gate as the races started, and making very uninformed bets on a few of our favorites.

I’m so glad we did this as part of a long weekend trip to Louisville and Lexington!

The first photo reminds me of a Sunday Afternoon on La Grand Jatte, except it was a Monday evening on Venice Beach. That Florida sunset and the people enjoying it were as pretty as a painting.

Biking to Claude Monet’s House and Gardens in Giverny, France, is such a fun and unique way to visit. It might seem daunting to add in the extra steps of renting and riding a bike, so I’m sharing the exact 10 steps you should follow to get you there:

1. Take the Paris Metro to Saint Lazare station in Paris.

2. Take the SNCF train from Saint Lazare station to Gare de Vernon-Giverny. The ride takes about 45 minutes.

3. Walk to the Givernon Rental Station, located just around the corner from the train station. It has both regular bikes and e-bikes, and you can reserve them online before your trip. The rental price includes helmets and bike locks.

4. Bike through the town of Vernon to the well-marked bike path to Giverny. There are plenty of signs, but you can also follow along on your GPS by clicking the bike route between Vernon and Claude Monet’s House and Gardens on your maps app. The bike ride takes about 20 minutes.

5. Park and lock your bikes on the bike racks at the first House and Gardens parking lot. There’s another parking lot a little farther up, but we spotted bike racks here. There’s also a map on the Givernon Rental Station website showing where to find bike racks.

6. Follow the signs and take the walking path to the House and Gardens.

7. Tour the House and Gardens. Make sure to purchase your tickets in advance online.

8. Bike back on the same path.

9. Drop off your bikes at the Givernon Rental Station. It’s easy and quick.

10. Walk to the Gare de Vernon-Giverny station and take the SNCF train back to Paris.

For people who don’t want to bike, there’s a shuttle you can take between the Vernon train station and the House and Gardens.

Want the link to the online rental website for the bikes? Comment BIKE and I’ll send it to you!

Does biking through the Normandy countryside to Monet’s house sound like something you’d like to do?

When things get tough, I always have this tool in the tool shed. The quickest way to settle my mind is to go for a walk outdoors. Does a walk in the woods work for you?

📍 Blood Mountain via Byron Reece Trail, Blairsville, Georgia
🍁 For leaf-peeping reference, we captured this video on October 28, 2023
🗒️ There was a re-route of the Byron Reece Trail that opened this past June to improve the trail’s usability and sustainability. That portion of the hike increased from .08 miles to 1.2 miles long.

Roswell’s Town Square has a darling new coffee shop called Cafe le Bon. Inspired in part by the owner’s desire to bring Lebanese flavors to Roswell, the cafe’s menu includes Turkish coffee, pistachio lattes, Lebanese flatbreads, and baklava, along with cafe favorites like sandwiches, salads, and croissants. The decor is warm and inviting, and I love the view of the square out the large front windows. So happy to have this charming addition right down the street! Welcome to the neighborhood, Cafe le Bon!

The whole family was raving about this cute and delicious cake from Nothing Bundt Cakes that we had for Graham’s birthday! We got the Big Bundt, which serves 18, so there were a few leftovers after the party, but we polished them off fast! 😋😁

Roswell friends, be sure to check out the new Nothing Bundt Cakes store located at 625 West Crossville Road in the Trader Joe’s shopping center. This location opened in July, and it’s so easy and convenient for ordering and pickup! I know where my family will be getting cake for our next celebration! 🥳 🙌

Thank you to Nothing Bundt Cakes Roswell for helping to make Graham’s birthday celebration so special!

I feel like we made great restaurant choices during our family trip to Aruba. I did a good amount of research and found five places that each had something special about them and were all a bit different from each other. I included them here in the order we visited them.

MooMba Beach Bar and Restaurant
Located right on Palm Beach, this restaurant was a quick stroll along the shore from the resort where we stayed. I didn’t expect much from the food, given it’s a beach bar with live music, a dj, and dancing every night, and I was pleasantly surprised by my delicious pincho skewer. The vibe is fun and relaxed, and sitting right on the beach with toes in the sand on your first night in Aruba can’t be beat.

Barefoot Restaurant
This is one of several iconic toes-in-the-sand fine dining restaurants on the island. Offering Caribbean-fusion cuisine, it’s a romantic yet family-friendly spot to enjoy the sunset. We were particularly impressed with the stunning photos our server took of us on the beach—he’d had lots of practice because he does it for guests all the time!

Papiamento Restaurant
This was the most upscale restaurant we visited during our Aruba trip and probably also my favorite. Located in a nineteenth-century cunucu manor house, Papiamento features elevated Aruban classics, like cazuela, a
Caribbean shrimp and rock lobster stewed in chowder with coconut milk. Delicious food combined with a gorgeous atmosphere under the trees!

Faro Blanco Restaurant
Yet another open-air dining spot, Faro Blanco is on the beach directly across from Aruba’s historic lighthouse. We had a prime sunset viewing spot, though the clouds didn’t entirely cooperate with us that evening. But that didn’t take away from the joy of being beachside while digging into our Italian fare.

Taste My Aruba Restaurant
This family-run restaurant is located in a restored home from 1936 in downtown Oranjestad and features authentic Aruban dishes. Along with the great food, what stood out to me about Taste My Aruba was the personal, welcoming service of the owners.

Save this reel for your future Aruba trip, and follow along for more tips and travel inspiration!

Back in 2019, I launched a website with my online travel blog, and this account was just one way to promote it. But somewhere along the way, after Google did some funny business with its algorithms and my growing blog views suddenly tanked, and my full-time job required me to edit other people’s content all day long, leaving me little patience to write and edit for fun, the online blog started to fade and this account started becoming the focus.

And as I began to focus on it, I learned more and more—about what kind of content to shoot, how to edit it, and how to put great hooks and captions together. I feel like it took way too long for me to figure it all out, but I’m pretty much there now—good visuals, good educational and (hopefully) entertaining captions, and enough of myself in the content to help us connect.

If you’re a longtime follower, I thank you for your patience as I learned along the way, and if you’re new, I hope you’ll follow along! I’m Shawn, a married mom of two grown sons from the state of Georgia, who shares local experiences as well as adventures around the world, and I’d love your help in getting one step closer to that elusive milestone! 🙏

And here’s a teaser for some upcoming content: I’ll be heading to New Orleans, Death Valley National Park, and Amsterdam, Brussels and Bruges in the coming months!

Day 2
-Tour Billings Farm and Museum
-Walk the grounds of Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park
-Stop at Quechee Gorge
-Whisky tasting at Vermont Spirits Distilling Co.
-Drive to Waterbury
-Drinks at Prohibition Pig and dinner at Hen of the Wood

Day 3
-Hike to Stowe Pinnacle
-Stop at Von Trapp Family Bierhall and Resort
-Walk downtown Stowe and the Stowe Recreation Path
-Drive to Stowe village and check out Stowe ski resort
-Dinner at Hugo’s in Montpelier

Day 4
-Apple cider donuts at Cold Hollow Cider Mill
-Drive the Stowe auto toll road and hike to the summit of Mount Mansfield
