This modest house nestled between the rocks and trees in West Vancouver was designed by Ron Thom in 1958, and then added to in 1966.

D'Arcy Jones Architect's current scope repairs both the structure and cladding to maintain the original character of the house, that has fallen into disrepair. The character and detailing that Ron Thom would have preferred on the 1966 addition will be added back, and then continued on a new low-slung addition. To make the house more functional for a growing family a new bedroom wing will be separated from the body of the original house, to not one-up it. A wild forest courtyard will be planted between the old and new volumes.

The house's original grey masonry carport wall and sculptural wood-burning fireplace will be repaired and repointed, remaining as strong granite-coloured anchors. Ron Thom's original composition of horizontal wood volumes and waist height strip windows that pinwheel around these solid vertical masses will carry on through sensitive modernization. by @fellshouse

When we first discovered the house it was somewhat of a mystery. It was hard to get a good look from the street as it was enveloped by the dense trees that surround it. We could tell there was something a little special. Perhaps it was the vertical brick walls and the long horizontal cedar cladding.

Though the house had fallen into disrepair and needed some significant work, we were propelled by the fact that it had not been altered too much over the years with the exception of the addition of a family room in the 70s. We were also pleased to know that the original blueprints were available to us. But most of all we felt like there was a sense of place. The design was thoughtful and the house integrated nicely into the landscape. by @fellshouse

D’Arcy Jones Architects repaired both the structure and cedar cladding to maintain the original character of the house, that had fallen into disrepair. The character and detailing that Thom had intended for the 1966 addition ⁠was added back and continued on a new low-slung addition.⁠ This move, along with updating the windows, remains in keeping with the principles of Thom’s architecture, integrating the natural outdoor space into the home. ⁠

Before and After. Some requests for more photos of the kitchen after the DOI podcast. The brief for the kitchen was to keep it ‘quiet’, not too shiny or bright, almost as if it had always been there. This was achieved through a restrained colour palette, understated materials and fixtures, and limited hardware. by @fellshouse
