On 23 August 2026, AfriTropical Health Initiative carried out a community cohort-based sensitization and health promotion outreach on environmental sanitation at Ogungbade, Ibadan, Oyo State.
The outreach reflects our commitment to our mission of driving positive behavioral change and addressing practices that contribute to the spread of infectious diseases.
During the engagement, community members were sensitized to the importance of proper waste disposal, environmental hygiene, and adherence to Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) practices as essential measures for preventing the spread and harboring of infections and diseases.
As part of our commitment to translating awareness into action, we also donated waste bins and essential WASH equipment to the community, providing practical resources to support improved sanitation practices and foster a cleaner, healthier, and safer environment.
At AfriTropical Health Initiative, we believe that sustainable health outcomes begin with empowered communities and healthier environments.
Together, we can promote healthier behaviors, strengthen community resilience, and build safer communities.

On 30 January 2026, the AfriTropical Health Initiative led a multi-sectoral partnership in collaboration with the Ondo State Ministry of Health (Department of Public Health), the Ondo State Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) Technical Working Group, the Ondo State Ministry of Education, and MITOSATH, Nigeria’s international NTD partner—to co-lead an NTDs awareness campaign at Eji Oba High School, Akure North Local Government Area to mark the World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day 2026.
Akure North is a recognised hotspot for four of the five major neglected tropical diseases prevalent in Ondo State, making the outreach particularly strategic. The campaign reached over 800 students through an engaging and highly interactive session that provided accurate health education, addressed common misconceptions about NTDs, and emphasized the importance of good sanitation and hygiene practices.
To reinforce learning, AfriTropical Health Initiative organised a mini-competition among students, with outstanding participants recognised and awarded. AfriTropical remains committed to strengthening this strategic partnership, particularly in preparation for upcoming mass drug administration activities in endemic communities.

The students’ energy was incredible from insightful presentations to awards for excellence. 🎖️
At AfriTropical, we believe awareness sparks action. Together, we’re building a generation ready to drive climate resilience and health equity across underserved communities.

On Friday, 16th May, 2025, we went out on our first community outreach which was aimed at increasing Lassa fever awareness and prevention at Owo High School, Ondo State.

Lassa fever is an endemic viral infection that continues to affect many communities across sub-Saharan Africa, with Nigeria bearing a significant burden in terms of confirmed cases and mortality. Given that Owo Local Government Area in Ondo State is one of the most affected regions in the country, we saw the need to educate students on how Lassa fever is transmitted and more importantly, how it can be prevented. This is in accordance to our mission to reduce unnecessary spread of Neglected diseases.

During the outreach, we encouraged the students to become agents of change within their communities by sharing the knowledge gained with their families and peers.

To further support hygiene practices within the school, we donated handwashing materials to improve hand washing practices, hence reducing the spread of diseases.

It was an insightful and impactful event and the students expressed genuine enthusiasm about our visit and look forward to future engagements.

In December 2017, I embarked on a journey that was completely haphazard and spontaneous.

As a pharmacy student in a faculty located at a university teaching hospital, I had to navigate through classes and practicals across different faculties.

It was a challenging experience that left me feeling hopeless and even contemplating suicide at times. I don’t want to romanticize these emotions, but it was truly something else.

Despite the difficulties, I also enjoyed being a pharmacy student and was vocal about it. Overall, it was a wholesome experience that I’m happy to have gone through.

And now, I’m proud to say that I’ve conquered it all and will be inducted into the Pharmacy profession as a Pharmacist. As someone who never quite fit in, I couldn’t be more proud of myself.

I would be honored if you could join me on this special day. Thank you all for your support.

Kindly be my guest 😊🌸
