Anni Baumann (@anniorwhoever ) and Fenn Tuohy (@fenleon ) reflect on what could come next for Berlin Scene Lab (@berlin.scene.lab ) after ‘The Tower’. Their long-term ambition is simple: to keep making films and eventually make it their day-to-day work. Whether that means becoming a production company or taking another form entirely, they are less interested in defining it now than in continuing to build things in their own way. For the moment, the focus remains firmly on finishing their €1 feature. Rather than getting too far ahead of themselves, Anni and Fenn are approaching the project in much the same way they have built Scene Lab itself: figuring things out as they go, focusing on the next problem, and taking it one step at a time. In this final clip from their talk for The Well, Anni and Fenn discuss their ambitions beyond The Tower, why they want to avoid simply following traditional industry structures, and why sometimes the best plan is to concentrate on making the thing directly in front of you. #TheWellBerlin #LearnLocal #BerlinSceneLab #TheTower #IndependentFilm Filmmaking BerlinCreatives by @fenleon
Anni Baumann (@anniorwhoever ) and Fenn Tuohy (@fenleon ) decided to take Berlin Scene Lab (@berlin.scene.lab ) in a completely new direction with a simple question: why not make a feature film for €1? What started as a late-night idea quickly became the next stage of the project. For Fenn, the challenge was immediately appealing because so much could go wrong, and so much could be learned in the process. For Anni, the €1 budget became a deliberate constraint. Rather than simply calling it a no-budget film, the idea was to create a clear framework that would test how far they could push the production with almost no financial resources. In this clip from The Well, Anni and Fenn reflect on the moment Berlin Scene Lab shifted from workshops into feature film production, and why turning the lack of money into part of the concept made the challenge even more interesting. #TheWellBerlin #LearnLocal #BerlinSceneLab #IndependentFilm #Filmmaking by @fenleon
Fenn Tuohy (@fenleon ) arrived in Berlin wanting to become part of the city’s filmmaking scene, but without strong German or an obvious route into the established industry. What drew him to Berlin Scene Lab (@berlin.scene.lab ) was how informal it felt. There was no polished pitch or traditional networking structure, just an invitation to show up, make something together, and meet other people working across acting, writing, and directing. For Fenn, that created a space where people could experiment, be vulnerable, and connect without having to constantly present themselves professionally. He describes Scene Lab as having a slightly “bratty” energy, something younger and more open than the parts of the industry he had encountered before. In this clip from The Well, Fenn reflects on discovering Berlin Scene Lab as an outsider, while Anni Baumann (@anniorwhoever ) touches on how the project found a space for a younger generation of filmmakers looking for somewhere to meet and create together. #TheWellBerlin #LearnLocal #BerlinSceneLab #Filmmaking #BerlinCreatives by @fenleon
Meet Anni Baumann (@anniorwhoever ) and Fenn Tuohy (@fenleon ) from Berlin Scene Lab (@berlin.scene.lab ). A Berlin-based filmmaking community built around bringing actors, writers, directors, and other creatives together to workshop material and make things together. Berlin Scene Lab began after Anni returned to Berlin following five years abroad and studying acting in New York. Having been surrounded by actors and filmmakers there, she found herself back in Berlin without the same creative community and wanted to find a way to meet people working in film. Rather than another traditional networking event, Anni wanted something centred around actually creating. She posted in a filmmaker WhatsApp group asking if anyone wanted to meet, workshop scenes, and hang out. Around 10 to 15 people came to the first session in a small Berlin studio, with some still involved in Scene Lab today. What began as a small workshop has since grown into Berlin Scene Lab, now run by Anni and Fenn and developing its first €1 feature film. In this talk, Anni and Fenn reflect on building the community, moving from workshops into production, and figuring out how to make an ambitious feature outside traditional filmmaking structures. #TheWellBerlin #LearnLocal #BerlinSceneLab #Filmmaking #BerlinCreatives by @fenleon
