Worried about foam? You're missing the entire picture in sustainable construction.

There's a common, almost obsessive debate: "We need to remove all plastic from our buildings!" Look, we get it. As a society, we over-rely on plastic. But honestly, when did plastic in construction become the ultimate villain? Especially when it's driving high-performance building? It seems wildly misunderstood.

Here's the inconvenient truth: SIP foam is 97% air, meticulously engineered for outstanding insulation, not polluting plastic. This drastically cuts your home's energy use, saving you a massive amount on bills over time. Advanced building wraps also use plastic for robust protection and crucial moisture/air control, because performance and longevity matter.

If we need a bit of plastic here and there to achieve genuinely high-performing, durable buildings, then frankly, what's the real problem?

Now, let's talk about environmental impact, shall we? Everyone loves to jump on the "plastic is bad" bandwagon. But while concrete and steel face scrutiny, why don't they cop the same level of outrage as plastic, especially when they're the actual two biggest contributors to global greenhouse gas emissions? Concrete production alone is a colossal CO2 emitter, profoundly dwarfing the plastic in SIP foam. The energy-intensive steel industry, for example, accounts for 7% of global CO2 emissions.

The minimal plastic in SIPS delivers immense energy savings over its long lifespan, dwarfing other materials' environmental burdens. This creates incredibly energy-efficient homes, dramatically cutting lifetime operational emissions. Simply put, foam's long-term energy savings easily offset its production carbon.

Plus, SIPs are durable and long-lasting, meaning less maintenance, fewer replacements, and a longer building lifespan. Their inherent strength can even lead to lighter construction and smaller foundations, reducing material use even further. Critics need to consider foam's holistic environmental and performance benefits; without it, insulating concrete slabs remains impossible.

Is sacrificing superior building performance and huge carbon savings for minimal plastic worth it? taken in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia by @fenster_panel

Why do we love Passivhaus?

It’s all about creating homes that are predictable, energy-efficient, comfortable, and with the correct material choices, sustainable!

A certified building also forces you to manage thermal bridges.

Thermal bridges are weak points in your home’s insulation, allowing heat to escape or enter, leading to higher energy bills, drafts, and uncomfortable temperatures.

They can also cause condensation, which may lead to mold and structural damage over time. Avoiding thermal bridges ensures a more energy-efficient, healthy, and durable home. Small details, big impact!

Here is a great example of how we’ve managed a thermal bridge on our current SIP Passivhaus.
