This Maize stands less than a mile from my home. Blocking the view beyond the gate like a sea of spears, and offering no sound nor smell. A few fellows lie in the foreground like a warning — we have reserves. We are many. You are one.
Or maybe they aren’t they - but IT. The crowding, menacing sense I feel is more singular.
So. Your warned. Dont trust the bloody Maize.

Last night my daughter @neve.roche absolutely knocked it out the park on stage as Woland (the Devil) in ‘The Master and Margarita’ at the Bristol Tobacco Factory. To see your kid transform and render - a much loved/hated/infamous character like the devil - so well, so 3-dimensionally was something else. How the shizz I have anything to do with her, I’ve no idea.

Massive congrats too to #bristolschoolofacting for staging such a professional piece and all of Neve’s friends and classmates. Just 1.5 years ago Neve went full time education into acting with BSA…!

To any parent out there thinking, should I support my kid doing acting instead of a more traditional academic route? Yes, yes, yes! 500%. Neve’s personal journey > transformation has been nothing short of amazing to watch and support, on and off the stage.

it’s my birthday. I’m 53, bitches and beatniks and boohoos and beautifics (please self select).

I #climb, cos I always wanted to. I climb, cos my kids do. I climb indoor bouldering walls, cos I’m scared of heights and I can’t be arsed with the ropes.
I’ve been climbing with the kids off and on for 2-3 years. Mainly on, Mondays and a Fridays.

I went through a phase where it was a chore. And another phase where I got it: ‘hips close to the wall,’ ‘angle your body, don’t go square to it’ and twenty more (just YouTube it).

But in the main - it became clear this year - it’s just great, quality time with the kids. They learn to climb, they learn to use their bodies and achieve things they never thought they could do. In a sport that demands thought and physicality. And technique (however strong you think you are, you can’t just muscle through it. Though Finn [eldest child] slightly disproved this last night after bashing out some V4s and hadn’t been in 6 months. Can’t trust our own children).

But last night, I too had an ‘achievement!’
I did an overhang. That one above. It was only a V2* but an overhang V2. Feet up above your hands type climbing. I was fucking Sly Stallone in Cliffhanger afterwards. In my head. Obvs the kids did it. But I did it too. Woo hey.

*It goes VB, V0, V1 up to V7s in the club. But can go up to V14 or something. So V2 isn’t much. But don’t forget that overhang. Alright! taken in Flashpoint Bristol by @ferg4ddc

How’s your grief today?’ asked Rae.
I am, aren’t I? In grief, I realised. Just hadn’t framed it that way. But it’s more than just, processing it. Grief.
Earlier in the day, this was yesterday, I’d looked at pictures of Sean. Pictures on my phone of him in hospital, conscious and looking at me. I have one before and another after he was shaved. He looks like mum.
It helped counter the image I keep seeing of him in those minutes before and after he passing away.
When my father died, he’d been in a coma for 18 months. By the end I was willing him to die. This man I and so many more loved. In many ways, by that end, I’d already completed my grieving. Or that first stage or two.
But most of all as I grieve for Sean, in these days since his passing on Saturday, and I chat to Rae, carry on working, parenting, emptying the dishwasher, I’m reminded often of the good things.
The ‘blessed’ moments as one of my Irish cousins - who’ve been calling me to pay their respects - might put it. Seeing the sun on a mown lawn (I know right!), hearing my eldest kid ask me how I am, and getting a freezing face swimming here at Vobster Quay this morning. Under more of that sun.
Images will fade, memories will dissolve, but today—what can I (and you) do, to feel safe, and happy, for our blessed self?

Earlier today, my brother Sean passed away, leaving behind his wonderful wife Anne and beautiful son Daniel.
Over the last six weeks I got to spend many days with him at a time. To talk and reminisce.
Death is hard. Even harder to watch a loved one die. But not many of us get that time at the end. I for one am grateful. taken in Peterborough by @ferg4ddc
