Catching ghost particles 👻

The Short-Baseline Near Detector collaboration released their first neutrino results today, marking a critical demonstration of the powerful tool scientists now have at their disposal.

Neutrinos are among the most elusive particles in the universe — earning them the nickname "ghost particles." Understanding them may be the key to solving some of our biggest cosmic mysteries.

This result focuses on understanding how neutrinos interact with argon atoms and lays critical groundwork needed to prepare for the Fermilab-hosted Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment at the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility.

@DUNEscience is looking to unlock the secrets of "ghost particles."

Neutrinos rarely interact with matter, making them ghosts in the cosmos. These elusive particles might also hold the key to some of the biggest questions in physics, such as why the universe is made of matter.

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment is building upon a 70-year legacy of neutrino research and will be the largest neutrino experiment of its kind.

The world's most intense neutrino beam will be fired from Fermilab 800 miles through the Earth to @SanfordLab, where the DUNE far detectors are being built.

Soon, Fermilab, @CERN and Sanford Lab will move DUNE one step closer to unlocking long-standing mysteries in particle physics and the origins of the universe.

Stars are nature's particle accelerators. 🌟

At the heart of every star, a process called fusion is taking place, and that's what makes stars shine. 🤩

Fusion powers stars for millions or billions of years. Now imagine if we could harness the power of the stars. 🔋

Fermilab is joining forces with our sister national labs to develop innovative magnetic technology to bring us closer to our fusion future.

Ghosts & spines 👻

SLAC researchers have developed SPINE, a machine-learning program that reconstructs neutrino interactions from complex detector images. It may be the key to understanding the most abundant & elusive particles in the universe – ghostly neutrinos.

For 40 years, Fermilab has been at the forefront of developing cutting-edge microelectronics.

These aren't just any chips – they're engineered to process the faintest signals in extreme environments, from high-energy bombardment to temperatures colder than outer space.

Now, we're leveraging super intelligence, also known as AI, to accelerate chip design. These efforts drive innovation in industries such as space exploration, medical imaging and autonomous vehicles.

Using robots to help build a state-of-the-art particle accelerator 🤖

The new accelerator being built at Fermilab is a study in precision. Every component must go together exactly right, because the smallest flaw in assembly can compromise how the machine performs for years to come.

That means that even the interiors of the accelerating structures, called superconducting radio-frequency cavities, must be spotless. Even the tiniest particulates can degrade accelerating efficiency or, worse, render a cavity unusable.

To enhance precision and maintain an ultra-clean environment during assembly of SRF cavities, the team brought in a collaborative robot, known as a “cobot,” in 2023.

And recently, a cobot autonomously aligned a coupler on an SRF cavity in a clean room.

Today, superconducting magnets are essential to both high energy physics and fusion energy research.

Certain materials, when cooled to extreme temperatures, lose all electrical resistance and can carry extraordinary currents, making them capable of generating magnetic fields far beyond what conventional electromagnets can achieve.

The MAGNES test bed at Fermilab will provide access to a volume of high magnetic field that can be used for testing the superconducting cables that would go into such a reactor. And at the heart of MAGNES will be a powerful magnet designed and fabricated by @berkeleylab.

The facility’s research will directly inform the design of magnets for next-generation fusion devices.

The @sqmscenter is one of five research centers funded by the U.S. Department of Energy as part of a national initiative to develop and deploy the world’s most powerful quantum computers and sensors.

The center is rooted in Fermilab's expertise in superconducting radio-frequency cavities, materials and cryogenics — technologies originally developed for particle accelerators — and in the lab's mission to explore the universe at its most fundamental level.

"We built SQMS deliberately as a multi-institutional center that unites expertise from laboratories, universities, companies and multiple disciplines," said SQMS director Anna Grassellino.

Six years after Grassellino founded the center, she provides perspective on the first six years of the center at the link in our bio.

Kim Budil, Director of @livermore_lab, visited Fermilab this week!

She gave a talk on how Lawrence Livermore National Lab built the National Ignition Facility, the only lab on Earth to achieve fusion ignition. Following the public talk, Budil, Fermilab director Norbert Holtkamp, @Argonne director Paul Kearns, and industry leaders participated in a panel discussion on the future of fusion.

The Fermilab-hosted Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment will be the world’s most advanced and comprehensive experiment dedicated to understanding neutrinos.

Just as NIF pushed the boundaries to achieve fusion ignition, Fermilab is now embarking on a similar monumental journey with @DUNEscience to unlock fundamental secrets of the universe. These ambitious endeavors exemplify how cutting-edge science and technology drive innovation, ultimately benefitting humanity.

Superconducting magnets 🤝 fusion energy

Decades of pioneering work to create powerful superconducting magnets for particle physics research also laid the foundation for technologies that have benefited society, such as MRI machines used for medical imaging.

Fermialb has expertise across advanced superconducting materials, magnet prototypes, diagnostics tools and analysis tools.

Now, Fermilab is launching the MAGNet Environment Simulator, or MAGNES. Jointly funded by the DOE Office of Fusion and the DOE Offices of High Energy Physics and Nuclear Physics, it will support research aimed at harnessing nearly limitless fusion energy.
