I was never good at chess. I was always more of a checkers guy myself. My dad and my brother, on the other hand, huge chess players. Mom and me? Lost one. Won one. Who gives a shit? Just playing checkers with Mom and having fun. Meanwhile, Dad and my brother were 20 moves ahead of the other guy, not realizing that 19 of those 20 things weren’t gonna happen. My other brother, Scott, he loved chess. He played chess his whole life. That’s why we became friends, and also why we butted heads. Anybody that grew up with us would’ve taken the bet that Scott and Nano wouldn’t be friends, let alone best friends, by their mid-30s But just like 20 possibilities and 19 things that don’t happen, that’s the 1 thing that did. Scott and I liked a lot of the same things, starting with the same girls. We were both confident in our own ways, and we were both hard to read. Scott always thought I had something up my sleeve, some sort of plan, some next move. But little did he know, I sucked at chess, and I was just there to play checkers. When he was serious, I’d joke. When I was joking, he’d get serious. We leveled each other out. A few years ago, I went through one of the hardest breakups of my life. But it wasn’t even the breakup. I kind of broke up with myself. I lost my spark. I lost my mojo. The one thing I never lost, though, was communication with my boy Scott. Even after living in different states for more than 15 years, there was always a text, always a call, or always some sort of check-in. And funny enough, the guy who spent his whole life thinking 20 moves ahead was the guy who reminded me to stop worrying about all the things that could happen. Just to slow down. See what actually does happen. And guess what? He was right.

The world lost a beautiful person this morning... Grandpa worked hard his whole life so his family could be where we are today. He was at the head of every table making sure everyone was always there. Keeping us close and teaching us how important it is to share the time we have with the ones we love the most. The bond I share with my Aunts, Uncle and cousins is so strong and full of love because of him.
