In These Hands is a documentary that follows three Black filmmakers on an 8,000-mile journey across the country to interview Black midwives, doulas, mothers, historians, and reproductive justice leaders, preserving a legacy that is as urgent today as it has ever been.

Help us bring it home by donating to our crowdfunding page (link in bio) and sharing to at least three people you know!

We’re bringing this to the world alongside Creative Control, the production company behind the award-winning docu-series Jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy and the award-winning documentary Katrina Babies.

✨THIS IS IT✨

In the US, Black women are 3x more likely to die from childbirth or pregnancy complications than white women.

I am working with a team of amazing Black queer women creating a documentary and photography series archiving the history and influence of Black birth-workers in the United States. Starting September 1st, myself, a trained oral historian, photographer Eva Woolridge @ewphotos1 trained oral historian, and filmmaker Safiyah Chiniere @safiyahchiniere are traveling for one month down South and across the U.S., interviewing Black midwives, doulas, mothers, and academics to archive the journey in keeping holistic traditions alive despite the institutional restrictions of their practices.

Starting in New York City, we are traveling via van to capture the stories in Maryland, Virginia, Alabama, Louisiana,Texas, Northern California, and Oregon. 🚙

We need your help to raise $50K to cover our travel and production in order to acquire the materials to complete an hour long documentary and photo series.

Link for our @ifundwomen campaign is in bio. Please donate and share this campaign widely!! This work is extremely important in protecting Black women and our bodies when it comes to medical treatment surrounding our reproductive health 🌻 by @ferryjot

WHAT A MILESTONE! We’ve reached $50k and it’s all thanks to more than 1,200 donors who believe in this story. We’re so grateful for the community, support, and love we’ve felt since we launched our campaign. Your stories remind us why we started this documentary; and why it’s so important that we finish it.

As we recognize Black Maternal Mental Health Week (July 19-25), we’re reminded in so many ways why this film matters. Black moms and birthing folks experience higher rates of perinatal mental health conditions and too often can’t access the care they deserve. But there is hope! Research shows that access to doulas, midwives and culturally responsive care CAN improve outcomes for so many.

Follow and support the folks doing this work everyday! @shadesofblueproject @blackmamasmatter @postpartumsupportinternational @birthequityalliance @thecyphercollective @nycdoulacollective @birthingadvocacy @bxrebirthcollective @birthingplacebx @bloominbaltimore

LONG POST: proof of life and a few good days post surgery.

tired, but still cute haha.

still waiting for more definitive answers and will then deliver them all at once; nervous, but anticipating more good days as they come along. I’ll readily take them in as most days apprehension comes the night before, nervous about what the next day might bring; what tomorrow might feel like. if my body will belong to me.

flinching toward the endless days of waking up and thinking to myself, did I do too much? push myself too hard? will I crash? (2+ doc appts in a day, a single flight of stairs, a 30 min call, an hr long therapy session, the subway, a car ride, a few hours in the sun, so much more. lemme tell you rn, I can barely make it through a movie)

and then, will I just push through it? (more often than not, I do. and, more often than not, no one can tell. somehow, almost always, it’s worth it.) thinking maybe tomorrow won’t be too bad. tomorrow, I’ll give in to a body that barely belongs to me, even if it steals away a day. or three.

I saw someone on here who was like, we’re going to crash anyway might as well make it worthwhile and do the things. think it’s time for me to redefine what those ‘things’ are; life does look different—not a bad thing. just a new thing.

my capacity is pooled in a such a small reserve so relearning myself has been a trek; not so sure I can say rewarding just yet. not sure if I ever will. just different. and new.

as of today, my post surgery feels are over, outside of minding the sun with my scar. my body can focus on other things. I can do a bit more.

tired, but still taking it slow. taking it in. by @ferryjot

Thank you all so much for coming out to our fundraisers this month! Between @pleasetellmebk and @theleslienyc, y’all helped us raise $1,720!!!

This film is for the community, by the community, and to everyone who came through and for folks that continue to donate, YOU ARE THE PROOF!!

We’re heading into post-production, so events will slow down for a bit, but we aren’t going anywhere! We aren’t done bringing folks together around birthwork, reproductive justice, and Black and queer joy. Our stories still need to be told!

Thanks again, y’all and Happy Pride! 🌈🏳️‍🌈
