Close-ups from the Pantanal

I just got back from guiding a photo expedition in Brazil’s Pantanal with @naturalhabitatadventures, and these are the moments that made it unforgettable. Every frame felt like a gift jaguars locking eyes with the lens, birds filling the sky at first light, giant otters feeding in the shallows.

What made this trip so special wasn’t just the wildlife it was the way everything came together. Expert local guides who knew exactly where to be and when. A unique itinerary that took us deep into the heart of the Pantanal. And a group of photographers who became friends by the last sunset.

What an unforgettable expedition in the Pantanal!

Nat Hab’s Brazil Jaguar & Wildlife Photo Expedition delivered some of the most incredible wildlife behavior I’ve ever seen. Jaguars on the prowl, giant river otters playing in the waterways — every day brought something breathtaking. We spotted 150 species of birds throughout the trip, and the locations and food were absolutely fantastic. But what truly made this journey special was the warmth of the Brazilian people they made us feel so welcome from the very first moment.

As the photo expedition leader, I couldn’t have asked for a better group we all had a fantastic time, me and every single guest on the trip.

If you’ve ever dreamed of seeing jaguars in the wild, this is the trip for it.

Guatemala was an extraordinary experience in every sense.

During our bird photography scouting, we explored the high mountains of western Guatemala, searching the cloud forests for some of Central America’s most remarkable birds. Few moments compare to suddenly finding a Resplendent Quetzal—the national bird of Guatemala—moving quietly through the forest. Encounters with elusive species such as Ocellated Quail, Horned Guan, and Wine-throated Hummingbird made the journey even more special.

Beyond the photographs, Guatemala reminded us of the incredible value of its natural heritage. Its forests hold an extraordinary concentration of biodiversity, and protecting them requires creating a sustainable travel industry that benefits local communities while giving these fragile habitats a reason to remain standing.

Wildlife photography is not only about documenting beautiful species—it is also about creating awareness and inspiring the protection of the places they call home.

Guatemala Bird Photography scouting ñ.

The final days of our Bird Photography scouting gave us so much from the majestic Horned Guan and stunning Wine-throated Hummingbird to the beautiful Unicolored Jay, and many more unforgettable species.

GUATEMALA WHERE THE MOUNTAINS COME ALIVE!
What an incredible adventure scouting Guatemala’s highland birding and photography opportunities!

I’m here with my good friend Greg Homel from Natural Encounters Birding & Wildlife Photography Tours and our fantastic local bird guide and photographer Daniel Mérida from Trovadan Tours, exploring spectacular highland ecosystems.

After landing in Guatemala City, we flew to Huehuetenango and began climbing into the mountains exploring misty forests, dramatic landscapes, ancient trees, and searching for Guatemala’s most sought after highland birds.

And WOW… the birds have been delivering!

We’ve been fortunate to photograph:

Ocellated Quail
Goldman’s Warbler
Resplendent Quetzal
Pink-headed Warbler
Unspotted Saw-whet Owl
…and many other incredible highland specialties!
Beyond the birds, Guatemala has been amazing. The scenery is breathtaking, the people are warm and welcoming, and the food is fantastic. There’s something magical about standing in these mountain forests, camera in hand, never knowing what incredible bird might appear next.

This scouting adventure with Greg and Daniel has been unforgettable, and we’re excited about what we’re discovering and what we can share with fellow birders and photographers.

Churchill, Manitoba, was truly an unforgettable adventure into the Arctic wilderness!
Getting to experience the incredible wildlife of the North from majestic polar bears and beautiful Arctic birds to the unforgettable belugas was beyond anything I imagined.

But one of the most magical experiences of the entire trip was our Beluga Safari. From our boat, we could see belugas everywhere, swimming all around us in the beautiful waters of Hudson Bay. At one point, several of them came right up alongside the boat and stayed there, looking at us as if they were just as curious about us as we were about them. It was such a special, peaceful, and surreal moment one I will never forget.

And as if the wildlife wasn’t enough, we were incredibly lucky to witness the Northern Lights! Seeing the sky come alive with those dancing colors in the Arctic was the perfect way to make an already extraordinary trip even more magical.

I also want to give a special shout-out to the wonderful people of Churchill. Everyone we met was so warm, friendly, and welcoming. They made us feel at home and added something truly special to the experience.

Churchill reminded me once again just how incredible and wild our planet is, and how fortunate we are when we get to experience nature up close, in its own environment.

A huge thank you to Natural Habitat Adventures for an incredible trip, fantastic organization, and for creating such unforgettable wildlife experiences.

Chichén Itzá Adventure

Our adventure continued with the second part of this incredible tour and this time, we traveled deep into the heart of the Yucatán to experience the magic of Chichén Itzá!
We visited this incredible ancient Maya city during the daytime, taking the time to explore its impressive temples, plazas, and monuments while learning more about the fascinating history and culture of the Maya civilization. Standing in front of El Castillo and walking through this archaeological wonder was truly unforgettable.

But the experience didn’t end when the sun went down!
We returned to Chichén Itzá to enjoy the spectacular nighttime light and sound show, where the ancient structures were illuminated in vibrant colors and the history of this extraordinary place was brought to life in a completely different way. Seeing Chichén Itzá both by day and under the stars made the experience even more special.

And, of course, being surrounded by the tropical forests of the Yucatán meant there was plenty of wildlife to discover! During our time in the inland areas, we were lucky to spot some amazing tropical birds, including the Turquoise-browed Motmot, Collared Aracari, Yucatán Jay, and several other beautiful species.

It was the perfect combination of Maya history, culture, archaeology, tropical wildlife, and adventure. From exploring Chichén Itzá under the Yucatán sun to watching its ancient monuments come alive at night, this was another unforgettable chapter of our journey.

Our latest whale shark tour was absolutely incredible!
We were blessed with awesome weather and amazing ocean conditions, giving us the perfect day to explore the waters around Holbox. We had the unforgettable opportunity to swim with at least five whale sharks, along with beautiful manta rays cruising through the clear blue water. It was one of those days when everything seemed to come together perfectly!

But the adventure didn’t stop underwater. Around the area, we spotted many different species of terns and shorebirds, and we were even lucky enough to see large groups of flamingos gathering in the shallow waters. The incredible wildlife made the whole experience even more special.

We also enjoyed the unique beauty of Holbox Island, with its laid-back atmosphere, pristine coastline, and incredible wildlife. To complete our days ,we visited the beautiful Yalahau Cenote, a refreshing natural spring surrounded by the lush landscape of the region.

It was truly a days full of adventure, nature, laughter, and unforgettable memories. Holbox delivered everything we hoped for—and then some!

Thank you to everyone who joined us and made this tour so much fun! We can’t wait for the next adventure.

My first trip to Alaska was beyond anything I could have imagined.

Known for its vast wilderness, towering glaciers, rugged mountains, and untouched landscapes, Alaska is one of the places where nature truly feels wild.

What made this experience unforgettable was the incredible wildlife.

Humpback whales surface just a few feet away, watching brown bears roam freely in their natural habitat, and spotting puffins, bald eagles, sea otters, and so many other amazing birds and marine animals felt almost unreal.

Every day brought a new encounter, and every moment reminded me how incredible it is to witness these animals living exactly where they belong.

The final chapter of our photo expedition

Our last stop on this unforgettable photo expedition was the magical cloud forest of Mindo, Ecuador a place where every trail, every tree, and every sunrise seemed to bring a new wildlife encounter.

This extraordinary ecosystem is one of the world’s richest biodiversity hotspots, making it a paradise for bird photographers and nature lovers alike. The mist-covered forests provide the perfect home for an incredible variety of bird species.

One of the biggest highlights was photographing the spectacular Andean Cock-of-the-rock, famous for its vibrant orange plumage and remarkable display behavior. We also had the chance to observe beautiful toucans, including the stunning Plate-billed Mountain Toucan and the unique Toucan Barbet, each adding even more color to an already incredible landscape.

And then there were the hummingbirds. Mindo is home to more than **30 species**, offering endless opportunities to photograph these tiny jewels as they hovered effortlessly among the flowers, flashing brilliant shades of emerald, sapphire, violet, and ruby.

Ending our journey in Mindo was the perfect way to close this expedition. It reminded us that some of nature’s greatest treasures are found in the quietest places, where every moment behind the camera becomes a memory that lasts a lifetime.

Thank you, Mindo, for an unforgettable finale.

What an incredible journey it has been so far in the Galápagos Islands!

Over the past days, we’ve shared unforgettable experiences, enjoyed amazing local food, and been treated to spectacular photographic opportunities every single day. From intimate wildlife encounters to breathtaking landscapes, the Galápagos has once again delivered moments that will stay with us forever.

As this chapter of our expedition comes to a close, we’re excited to be heading into the final portion of the adventure—birding and photography in the highlands of Ecuador. The cloud forests await, and we’re looking forward to photographing some of Ecuador’s most sought-after specialty species amid the misty forests and stunning mountain scenery.

The adventure continues, and we can’t wait to see what surprises the cloud forest has in store!
