Democratic institutions lose credibility when public promises go unmet and constitutional rules are changed to keep leaders in power. What would it take to earn young Africans’ trust again?

Jean Francois Kouassi makes the case for respecting term limits, protecting dissent and giving young people decision-making responsibility in parties, parliaments and local government. He argues that democracy’s relevance depends on how it addresses their daily concerns, from employment to justice.

Workers’ rights are strengthened when workers understand their collective power, organise together, and actively shape the decisions that affect their lives. ✊🏽

From 20–22 October 2026, IndustriALL Sub-Saharan Africa Regional Office (@industriallssa), in collaboration with @festanzania, convened a three-day national workshop in Dar es Salaam under the theme “Class Consciousness and Human Rights Due Diligence in Tanzania.” The workshop brought together youth activists and trade union representatives (@tuicounion, @tamico.official, @tpawu_tanzania, @zapswuofficial) to examine class relations, human rights, and worker power in Tanzania’s extractive and industrial sectors.

Through discussions on Tanzania’s economic history, global value chains, labour rights, and corporate human rights due diligence, participants explored how trade unions can move beyond compliance audits towards worker-led approaches that strengthen organising, collective bargaining, and accountability. Gender equality was central to these discussions, highlighting the need to address unequal pay, insecure employment, sexual harassment, and barriers to women’s participation and leadership in trade unions.

The workshop aims to translate these discussions into practical action through a worker-led human rights due diligence checklist and affiliate action plans that connect workplace organising, collective bargaining, and community alliances. The goal is to ensure workers, including women and those in informal and subcontracted employment, have a stronger voice in shaping the conditions under which they work and the benefits their labour creates. 🤝🏽

Three days at the @festanzania of Young Leaders Forum having discussions, new perspectives and connections with different people .Learning and giving our insights on digital human rights and our national economy to leadership and the future of Tanzania was a space where we could openly share ideas and learn from one another for future of the nation years from now.

One of the most memorable experiences was our visit to UWAWAMA @uwawamatv , where we learned about the challenges women in Manzese face in their journey towards economic empowerment, often with very limited resources but still making sure they find sources, people,to connect together just leaving no Woman behind struggling by herself financially .
Hearing their stories was a reminder of the importance of standing with women led initiatives and continuing to support their efforts towards economic independence.

It was a good experience, both inside and outside the discussion rooms. As the programme comes to an end soon I’m grateful for the conversations, the people we met and the lessons we carry forward. 🇹🇿 by @festanzania

Domestic work is work, and domestic workers deserve dignity, protection, and decent working conditions. 🏡✊🏽

On 15–16 October 2026, CHODAWU and @festanzania convened a two-day workshop in Dodoma to advance discussions on the ratification of @ilo.org Convention No. 189 on Decent Work for Domestic Workers. The workshop brought together stakeholders to examine the challenges facing domestic workers, identify existing legal and policy gaps, and discuss the roles of government institutions and other actors in strengthening their protection.

Through presentations, group discussions, and stakeholder engagement, participants explored the realities of domestic work in Tanzania, including gender and human rights concerns, and the measures needed to move towards ratification. The discussions also focused on developing practical recommendations, identifying priority actions, and establishing a roadmap for coordinated follow-up.

Protecting domestic workers means recognising their rights, valuing their contribution, and ensuring that decent work extends to every workplace, including our homes. 🤝🏽

There is no greater gift that lasts a lifetime for a young person than knowledge. I feel privileged to continue learning new things and gaining valuable insights through my experience with @festanzania

Through this experience, I have come to understand that constitutionalism is a fundamental pillar of development and that a human-centered approach to leadership, particularly one that prioritizes marginalized groups, can create greater impact and deliver more meaningful and inclusive results.

Every new lesson is an opportunity to grow, become a better leader, and contribute to building a more just and inclusive society. by @festanzania

What does it take to build a democracy that delivers for everyone? And how can Tanzania pursue economic growth while ensuring that no one is left behind?

Over three days, participants of the #YoungLeadersForum explored the essence of good governance and inclusive economic development during the sixth session of the year-long programme. They examined how constitutionalism, the rule of law, accountability and citizen participation shape democratic institutions. Discussions also covered digital rights and data protection, Tanzania’s position in the global economy, foreign investment and regional integration, alongside the economic barriers facing grassroots women, including access to finance and unpaid care work.

The session also included a visit to Ushirika wa Wanawake Wavujajasho Manzese (UWAMAMA), offering participants an opportunity to connect these discussions with the realities of grassroots organising. Through insights into the experiences of women organising around shared economic challenges, participants could gain a practical understanding of how collective action, community engagement and local initiatives can advance economic justice and inclusive development.

A key takeaway was that good governance and economic development cannot be separated. Economic growth must go hand in hand with accountability, equal opportunities and the fair distribution of its benefits. For young leaders, this calls for active engagement in strengthening democratic institutions and championing policies that put people at the centre of development. 🇹🇿✊🏽

The future of work is a conversation we cannot afford to have without young people. I was pleased to participate in the FES Dialogue Forum (III):

“Youth and the Changing World of Work: Challenges, Opportunities and Pathways to Decent Work in Tanzania” in Dar es Salaam.

#youthsports#future#work#fatmasarhan🇹🇿 #tanzania

The dialogue brought together perspectives from workers, employers, entrepreneurs and young people to explore some important questions:

💼 How can we create more pathways into decent work?
🎓 What skills will young people need in a rapidly changing world of work?

🚀 How can entrepreneurship and innovation create sustainable livelihoods?

🤝 What can employers, unions and other stakeholders do to support young people?

🗣️ And most importantly, how can young people be placed at the centre of shaping the future of work?

The group discussions were a valuable opportunity to move from identifying challenges to thinking about practical and transformative solutions.

The future of work is not only about adapting to change, it is about ensuring that young people have the opportunity to shape that change.

Thank you to FES Tanzania and all the participants, speakers and contributors for creating space for this important conversation.

✊🏾 Strong worker organisation is central to protecting workers’ rights and advancing their interests. This includes understanding employment contracts, knowing labour laws and having the collective strength to negotiate and address challenges in the workplace.

In Dodoma, @tamico.official branch leaders are strengthening their knowledge on labour standards, workplace relations, gender and women participation in trade union work, dispute resolution and collective bargaining, as part of a trade union empowerment effort supported by @festanzania in collaboration with the TUCTA Labour College (@tanzanialabour). 🤝🏾

The Dodoma workshop is the second in a series, following the first workshop held in Mwanza on 16–17 September.

Rest well, Comrade Nkakatisi! 🕊️

It is with great sorrow that we learned of the passing of Comrade Boniface Y. Nkakatisi, former General Secretary of @tuicounion.

For more than three decades, Comrade Nkakatisi was an important part of the cooperation between @festanzania and TUICO, contributing to a partnership built around workers’ rights, social justice, and the advancement of the labour movement in Tanzania.

We deeply value his commitment, his contribution to the trade union movement, and the many years he dedicated to strengthening workers’ voices and institutions.

His passing is a great loss to his family, colleagues, workers and the wider labour movement. His contribution and legacy will not be forgotten.

Our thoughts and deepest condolences go to his family, friends, colleagues, and workers during this difficult time.

Rest in peace, Comrade Nkakatisi. ✊🏾🕊️ by @festanzania

💡 What does it mean to put people, not assumptions, at the heart of problem-solving?

That was one of the questions at the core of the fifth session of the #YoungLeadersForum, where participants spent two engaging days exploring Design Thinking, Climate Change and Just Transition.
On the first day, participants unpacked the principles of human-centred design, following the journey from empathizing and defining a problem to ideating, prototyping and testing solutions. They then put these ideas into practice through a real-life design challenge, pitching their solutions and receiving feedback.

Day two shifted the conversation towards one of the defining challenges of our time: climate change and the future of work. Through discussions, expert inputs and sectoral group work, participants explored how climate change is already affecting communities, jobs and livelihoods, and what a just transition could look like for workers and vulnerable groups. They also identified opportunities for green jobs, new skills and stronger collaboration across sectors. 🌍

These conversations are an important part of the leadership journey. Effective leadership is not about having all the answers; it is about listening carefully, navigating complex challenges, valuing diverse perspectives and translating ideas into meaningful action.

As the Young Leaders Forum journey continues, participants are gaining practical knowledge and developing the confidence to respond to uncertainty, work with others and contribute to a fairer, more sustainable future. 🤝
