Ludwig Goller – the Dean of DIN Today would have been Ludwig Gollers birthday! He’d be 142 years old.⁠ Goller was in charge of the design of DIN 1451, he was convinced that “the standard typeface DIN 1451 has the simplest, simplest, strictly practical form that is possible for a typeface. It is therefore also suitable for artistical purposes.” We think – at least nowadays – no one would disagree. ⁠ ⁠ In the German Empire, the Royal Prussian Railways (Königliche Preussische Eisenbahn – KPE) were the first to standardize master drawings (Normalien) for their lettering in 1905. The use of a ruler, compass and a coarse grid is typical for the design of the letterforms. In search of suitable models for so-called utilitarian lettering in the 1920s, ⁠the DIN committee on type – of wich Ludwig Goller was the chairman – decided to adopt the letterforms by the Prussian Railways for the then new standard DIN 1451 on lettering in the public space. DIN 1451 Engschrift (aka Condensed) was based, with few changes, on the Prussian master drawing. DIN 1451 was first issued as a so-called preliminary standard in 1932 with official release following in 1936.⁠ ⁠ Nowadays the typeface DIN 1451 is still used as a traffic typeface in Germany. Happy World Standards Day everyone!⁠🎉⁠ ⁠ On August 18, 1922, the A4 paper size was introduced, as part of the German standard DIN 476. The standardisation of paper sizes was conceived by Dr. Walter Porstmann who had worked at the NDI (Normenausschuss der Deutschen Industrie), the predecessor of the DIN Institute, from 1920 to 1923. His systematic approach was a clever adaptation on the “Weltformat” range of sizes which had been designed by Wilhem Ostwald, to whom he was assistant from 1912 to 1914. Compared to Ostwalds proposal, Porstmann’s system had two advantages: ⁠ – A0 exactly measures one square meter. Paper weight could thus be easily measured and described in gram/m2. ⁠ – A4 fitted in the binders which were already in use for existing German paper sizes, whilst Ostwald’s did not.⁠ With ISO 216, the A-range of paper sizes was established as an international standard in 1975.⁠ ⁠ Reichsformat does not relate to a paper size from that time though. It relates to a standard size for bricks which was established in 1872 in the German Empire. Altona manoeuvres confidently through the water!⁠ She proudly bears the Stuhlmannbrunnen (fountain) from Altona on her sail! The typeface was designed by Albert-Jan Pool and Julia Uplegger, Antonia Cornelius contributed the icons and the small caps.⁠ ⁠ ⁠Altona is a distinctive and cosmopolitan typeface inspired by street signs of the former City of Altona, now a district of Hamburg. Altona is a bold character – clearly constructed, yet unconventionally playful. Delicately engineered with an unpolished charm, Altona is a display typeface with perfect craftsmanship and a mind of its own.⁠ ⁠ Designed by Antonia Cornelius, Altona’s extensive set of 160 icons are also inspired by Hamburg’s district, and 60 of them directly relate to its history.
