It's a good day all round when the garden volunteers embrace the drizzle and harvest the late summer produce, including some comedy potatoes!

We did it! We held another Green Skills course that was *free* for the local community! This time, we were making bird boxes from scratch. Again, creating the opportunity for course participants to learn how to use a selection of power tools and hand tools, as well as learning how to adapt the bird boxes to suit different species.

Our Green Skills courses are funded by Grannell Community Energy and are running all year, so please do check the website or contact info@denmarkfarm.org.uk if you want to find out more about them and to see if you are eligible for a free space.

Yesterday we had a really fun and successful bug hotel building course, run as part of our Green Skills Workshops that are free for the local community, kindly funded by Grannell Community Energy.

Our Nature Reserve Manager Chris taught participants about the different types of habitat needed for the different species of invertibrates they wanted to attract in their various life cycle forms, and he provided a selection of natural and recycled/reclaimed materials from Denmark Farm that could be put together to create unique bug hotels.

Our participants had various levels of skills - some complete beginners who had never held any tools before, and some on the other end of the scale who were quite proficient with power tools. Everyone came out with a finished bug hotel based on their own design, and they all had a go using the SDS drill, chop saw and various other tools.

"I thought we would just be filling boxes with sticks in pretty patterns, and I am nervous of using power tools so I wasn't expecting to do that. So I am really pleased I came, because I've used tools I never would have had the confidence to try otherwise, and I had loads of fun doing it. I've learnt new things about identifying species in different stages, and enjoyed creating something that looks good and does something good at the same time. I am definitely going to come back for another course, can't wait!"

Chris and the volunteers have been working hard to make a usable garden space behind the ecolodge for guests, so that they have a peaceful place to sit and watch wildlife (and cows!). It will make such a difference to the ecolodge experience, for guests to have a private slice of nature to themselves 🌿

According to the National Trust, there were only eight recorded sightings of the Hummingbird Hawk Moth in 2021 in the UK. Apparently they are out in full force this summer and we are lucky enough to have seen one at Denmark Farm today!
Have you seen one?

They have a distinctive grey, hairy body, bright orange wings and what looks like a black and white ‘tail’, but they are most distinctive for the fact that they hover over flowers. 🌺
They can beat their wings up to 80 times a second so they make a distinctive humming sound as they fly past you.

Isn’t nature amazing! 🤩🦋

Don’t forget that you are welcome to come for a walk around Denmark Farm any time from dawn to dusk, 364 days a year. You can access our walking trails map on the website, or there are copies at the welcome shelter you can use while you’re here. Dogs on short leads are very welcome.

The best place to spot these day flying moths is on the valerian by the utility room so do stop by there and have a look to see if you can see one, and let us know if you do!
