Last night, Governor Newsom signed our bill AB 2483. 🔥

Authored by Assemblymember Sade Elhawary, this bill gives incarcerated firefighters the certifications they need to keep fighting fires after release. We've worked on it for two years, and it's now California law.

Wildfires keep intensifying, and the state needs trained, experienced firefighters on the front lines. People who put their lives on the line while incarcerated have earned the chance to keep doing that work when they come home.

Thank you to Governor Newsom, Assemblymember Elhawary, and every partner who stuck with this. 🚒

A California bill designed to turn the training and frontline experience of incarcerated firefighters into pathways to firefighting careers cleared a major hurdle today, advancing out of the Senate Appropriations Committee with unanimous support.

Assembly Bill 2483, authored by Assemblymember Sade Elhawary (D-57), would establish a standardized process to ensure eligible incarcerated firefighters receive official documentation reflecting the training they completed before release and help translate that training and field experience into opportunities for careers with CAL FIRE.

The vote marks a particularly significant milestone for the effort. A predecessor bill authored by Elhawary, AB 1380, reached the Senate Appropriations suspense file in 2025 but was held under submission. AB 2483 has now cleared the hurdle where the previous effort stalled and will advance toward consideration by the full Senate.

BREAKING: Last night, Governor Newsom signed our bill AB-2483 into law, creating a pathway for formerly incarcerated firefighters to get certified and continue their firefighting careers after release.

People who fought fires on the front lines while incarcerated deserve the chance to keep doing that work when they come home. AB 2483 makes that possible.

Share this and spread the word. When we invest in second chances, we create safer, stronger communities for all of us.
