Over the summer, Honors College student, Mariana, was awarded Honors Development Funds to study abroad in Southern Spain, teaching English to school children. Here’s what Mariana had to say about her experience:

“This summer I had the privilege of studying abroad in Granada, Spain through Conexiones, a faculty-led program focused on immersing in the culture and history of Andalusia. Over the course of the program I lived with a host family, explored the Alhambra and the historic streets shaped by centuries of Muslim, Christian, and Jewish heritage, and grew in ways that go far beyond the classroom.

A highlight was our service learning at Ave Maria school, where our group taught English classes to local middle schoolers in Granada. Giving back to the community that welcomed us so warmly was easily one of the most rewarding parts of the experience.

Thank you to the Office of Global Education (GEO) at FGCU and the Honors College for making this possible, and to our faculty and fellow students for turning two weeks abroad into a truly unforgettable learning experience.

This trip reminded me why I value cross-cultural connection so much — and left me even more excited about a future working across cultures and borders.”

FGCU Honors College Alumni Spotlight🌟

Honors College alumna and Irish dancing world-champion, Meagan Urbanek, is hoping to return FGCU to pursue the PA Program! Here’s what this Nerdy Bird has been up to since graduating in 2024:

“As a professional Irish dancer, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to travel and perform around the world, including in London’s West End, Off-Broadway in NYC, Los Angeles, and Nashville, to name a few. Through hard work and determination, I worked my way up the ranks and had the privilege of performing as a lead dancer. I am honored to represent the Nerdy Birds both around the country and abroad! For now, I’m hanging up my dance shoes for a bit and turning my focus to PA programs. Although, you might still catch me dancing at McGregor’s Public House here in town every once in a while.”

Read more about Meagan’s journey to the championship title in the 2024 throwback article from FGCU|360: “From FGCU to the world stage: one student’s Irish dance journey”

Congratulations to Destiny on receiving a highly competitive Fulbright U.S. Study/Research Award! Destiny will spend nine months in the Philippines conducting research on coastal vulnerability, with the goal of helping communities better understand and respond to sea-level rise, flooding, and erosion.

Destiny worked closely with the @officeofcompetitivefellowships where she received guidance in developing a competitive application. Her success highlights the value of early preparation, meaningful research experiences, and taking advantage of opportunities both inside and outside the classroom to build a strong application.💪

Spain dump🤭

This summer, Honors College student, Kaylee, was awarded Honors Development Funds to study abroad in Southern Spain to get immersed in Spanish culture and history.🇪🇸

Here’s what Kaylee had to say about her experience:

“The time I spent in Southern Spain studying abroad changed my significantly. My time there included living with a host family, working with and getting to know people from the local community, doing service-learning projects, and visiting some amazing historical cities such as Granada, Cordoba, and Seville. I engaged with many locals and got to visit so many different architectural beauties that painted Spain in a wonderful way. I developed an understanding and appreciation of the culture and history of Spain that I didn’t have before this trip. I gained greater confidence, expanded my worldview, and developed an ever-increasing understanding of the value of cultural understanding, especially since I want to work in the field of nursing. I am so thankful that I was able to have this opportunity to challenge myself and grow as a person and as a professional.”

In the spring, Honors College student, Oliver, was awarded Honors Development Funds to study abroad in Slovenia for the Chamber Choir International Tour.🎶

Here’s what Oliver had to say about his experience:

“I traveled with the Bower School of Music to Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia for 10 days in March of this year, and it was the most unique experience I have had in my college career. I never thought I would be able to say that I have performed with a choir around Europe, and seeing a photo of my choir on the doors of a Venetian church was surreal. I enjoyed the chance to grow even closer with my fellow choir members, and I can confidently say that I found where I belong on campus.

I got a real opportunity to engage in cultural exchange and understanding in an immersive and unforgettable way. I would not have been able to do this without the help of the Honors College.” Student smiling and doing “wings up” in front of a European landscape. taken in Florida Gulf Coast University by @fgcuhonors
