During my study abroad in Tuscany, we were required to read “The Passion of Artemisia” by Susan Vreeland. It’s a biographical historical fiction novel that follows the life of a real woman— 17th century Italian Baroque painter, Artemisia Gentileschi.

🖼️ When we toured the Uffizi in Firenze, we set out to find Artemisia’s most famous painting— Judith Slaying Holofernes. Although painted by many men before her— including Caravaggio— Artemisia’s depiction was done only in a way a woman could. Part of this was because of what Artemisia endured as a woman to become a painter. I discuss it in the carousel.

🇮🇹 If you didn’t know, I spent part of my summer in Italy studying abroad. As an Urban Planning & Sustainable Design major, one of my favorite parts of traveling is seeing how cities around the world are rethinking the relationship between people, buildings and nature.

🌳 Milan’s Bosco Verticale, or “Vertical Forest,” is one of the most striking examples I’ve seen. Completed in 2014 and designed by Stefano Boeri’s studio, the two residential towers are covered with roughly 800 trees, 4,500 shrubs and more than 20,000 plants.

🚶🏾‍♂️ But what interested me just as much was the neighborhood around it. Bosco Verticale is part of Porta Nuova, a major urban-regeneration project that transformed former rail and industrial land into a mixed urban district connecting Porta Nuova, Isola and Garibaldi.

At its center is Biblioteca degli Alberi, a public park filled with walking paths, gardens, gathering spaces and more than 500 trees. From there, pedestrian routes connect you to neighborhood cafés and restaurants, Piazza Gae Aulenti, shopping, transit and the surrounding neighborhoods.

What I loved about this area is that the greenery isn’t treated as decoration. It’s part of the infrastructure of everyday life.

This is what modern urban design can look like when architecture, nature, public space and mobility are designed together.

🙋🏾‍♂️ Should cities be designing more neighborhoods like this, or is this kind of ‘green urbanism’ only realistic for wealthier communities? taken in Bosco Verticale by @fhartunknown

One thing I did a lot of during my Euro Summer that I hadn’t in trips past was, “look up.” Like, really look up and at. Take in all the details and not rush to go from one site to the next. You know what I discovered? Renaissance painters were on some freaky ahh 💩 I get that they were envisioning what Hell might be like, but c’mon dog. They’d have babies being eaten, Kash Patel’s fetish, all types of nasty going on. Then you get to the scenes of Heaven, and it wasn’t all harps and paradise either.

Looking up showed me a lot and it made me even more skeptical about religions and their psychological hold on humanity. People thought of and did some evil 💩 in the name of faith and wanting eternal life.

Thoughts?

One of the photos I printed to hang up in home is this one of the famous Dolomites church— Chiesa di Santa Maddalena. As many people as there are who come here, from what I saw, not many walk all the way up the hill to get this view. There are also a lot of vantage points, so don’t let crowds dissuade you.

🖼️ I’m excited to finally print my own photographs. Have you done your own? taken in Chiesa di Santa Maria Maddalena (Genova) by @fhartunknown

Modena, Italy 🇮🇹 surprised me. It surprised me because I was shocked how little I hear about it on the travel circuit. Turned out to be a very beautiful town and worth a day trip or more if you’re staying in Bologna. Come here for a delicious balsamic vinegar tasting; see the Ferrari museum; and walk around one of the underrated piazzas in the region.

Smoother than a gentle breeze. Flowing through my mind with ease.

Krk, Croatia 🇭🇷

Talk about a town to get lost in. This might be my favorite of them. Although the centre is small in comparison to other European destinations, the many narrow, cobbled streets here are perfect to wander through. You think you might be “getting lost” and suddenly you find yourself back where you began. Get lost in Krk. taken in Krk, Croatia by @fhartunknown

Firenze, you were a love I thought I’d keep returning to. But sometimes you revisit someone you once loved and realize they’ve changed, or maybe you have. I’ll never forget what we were, but seeing you now hurts in a way that tells me it may be time to let you go. Some loves are meant to stay memories.

First time in Sorrento 🍋🇮🇹 Taking in the sea views, colorful streets and all the lemon everything, with a little help from the air-conditioned tourist train because that Italian summer heat is no joke. 🚂☀️
