I’ve been trying to find the words to describe this trip. A few that come to mind: beautiful, enlightening, awe-inspiring, and magical.

Growing up, I often felt disconnected from my Bolivian heritage. At times, I even carried a quiet sense of shame for not feeling “in touch” with my roots. But as I’ve grown older, my curiosity and appreciation for my grandparents’ stories of growing up in Bolivia have deepened as I’ve grown older.

This trip wasn’t just for me. It was for my Abuela, who speaks with such pride and love for her homeland.

As I continue to embrace my identity as a latina and reconnect with my ancestral lineage, I find myself feeling more grounded and whole.

To anyone who’s ever felt disconnected or ashamed for not speaking the language, or for not growing up with certain traditions—you’re not alone. You are still worthy and it’s never too late to start asking the questions you didn’t know how to ask before.

Little Sophia would be dancing around right now,

Twelve-year-old Sophia was onto something. She was a dreamer, and as I continue to grow, I hope I never stop finding new sueñitos along the way.

Shoutout to my familia for making their way from Minnesota to San Diego to celebrate this day with me. It takes a village and I feel so lucky to have all of you supporting me along this ride!!

These past five years have been thrilling, overwhelming, and healing. Through every storm I’ve encountered, a sunny sky was waiting for me. My college journey wasn’t your traditional experience, but it is MY unique experience.

There is no “right path” there is just your path, the steps you choose to take.
My whole life I will continue to seek, explore, wonder, be curious, and adapt as I continue to live.
