The caption: A quick google search tells me there are approximately 48,000 prominent cities in the world.

The political hot-take: for Copenhagen to be consistently ranked #1 by many outlets tasked with these type of assessments, one can assume it’s a testament to the peak version of a welfare state. A nation that focuses its energy on the creation of human capital, providing good service delivery, and acknowledging and respecting rights -human or otherwise- is on a righteous path as far as I’m concerned. While I wish Scandinavia was THE beacon of light for my spec of the woods, I also understand why Latinamerica looks north 🇺🇸 -tho’ not north enough where a better example lies 🇨🇦*.

So go figure, turns out that removing the anxieties that stem from a lack of access to affordable health care, education, food, child care, retirement, and a clean environment make for a disarmingly happy people, and happy, sweet, and kind they were!…not what nordic lore might lead you to believe. Yes, the cold months are surely a drag, but I’d trade a whole lot of sunshine for the good bits. Anyways, Denmark is mega*** bla/bla/bla. I give it an emphatic✌🏽👍🏽🆙

I grew my first set of roots in what modern lore considers “the pre auto-tuned era” of the Antillean Caribbean. Many moons above concrete jungles came and went, til a crew of the loveliest Angels, Magi, & Drunks helped me find my way back to sea. When the WhatsApp group titled “Sailing 2026 ⛵️” popped up on my phone, I was but a moth to its flame. Like an overly willing contestant on your preferred Netflix dating show, I typed a resounding “YES!” before a question was even asked. As this most modest of odysseys comes to a premature end (one must inevitably return to the doldrums of the nine-to-five), I can only hope to say EVET! a few more times to the easiest of questions: “🇹🇷⛵️?”

for so damn much! One day I promise to get the 🪢 right 70% of the time.

*EDIT: my birthday is August 25th. However, given the fortuitous gathering -and despite my objections- it was “celebrated” 3 weeks in advance. No filter needed when it’s just another rugged pictorial survivor of the Reagan-era 80s (I place it before the Rocky IV speech that ended the Cold War -things got better for some, and worse for others)…can’t say where this was hidden, or how deep inside Titi’s treasure trove of archives…I’d like to think it was found within a rum-soaked box with intricate carvings made out of mahogany or a centennial ceiba tree…

But it’s the Caribbean, it’s just as likely to be found under threads, rolls of measuring tape, and expired lottery tickets at the bottom of that familiar creaky aluminum cylinder that in a previous life was packed with cookies…cookies with mysterious crystalized sugary bits on top, some designed like ribbons, placed neatly above each other by loving grandmas somewhere in the outskirts of Copenhagen…their shelf life use forever threatened -but never defeated- by the advent of tupperware and other morose inventions that symbolized plastic’s power and ushered in the era of refrigerator tetris.

I’ve digressed, the pic features my dearly missed and eternally beloved Papá & Lela, and the ever kind and caring Titis…the trademark “sad eyes” betray the joy of this safe place, they were still some years away from being perpetually hidden and framed by the eyewear du jour…all the good bits of the bushy-tailed youth with the Boricua fam is encapsulated for eternity in this picture -or til it’s lost, cos circularity.

The L’enfant terrible days wouldn’t surface for another few years, but that was 428 km west, in another island, on the same sea :-) taken in San Juan, Puerto Rico by @ficosaurio
