Residents & activists respond to Camden City Council’s choice to blame lithium-ion batteries for their metal recycling plant’s pattern of toxic fires.

A massive fire broke out in Camden, NJ on Friday Feb.21st that caused a shelter-in-place request from city officials and even forced some residents into nearby hotels due to toxic air quality levels.

EMR, the United Kingdom based company that owns the metal recycling plant, has been the source of many of these highly toxic fires in recent years.

Yesterday is proof that third spaces to connect community and cultivate culture for a cause, can be done even over a cafecito 🤎

100% of tickets, donations and sales made at @elcoquicafe yesterday (who isn’t usually open on Sundays but they did for us!) go towards our partnership with @rebuild.us to support local organizations getting clean water directly to communities across Puerto Rico during their current water crisis.

Thank you familia!

Truth is, I’m in a state of rage most of the time but I still feel hope.
They want us to feel defeated and isolate ourselves but every time you step out the house in your Sunday’s best to work like it’s a Monday (even on a Wednesday) is a win.

Thanks to my tribe, the people that reach out and my career for keeping this crazy kid busy <3 taken in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by @fictionfrank

Puerto Rico’s water crisis is about more than a drought.

The island loses about 65% of their clean water through leaking pipes and old infrastructure. Water shortages and rationing are not new either. Communities faced major shortages in 2015, again in 2020, and are facing them again today.

And while communities were dealing with water rationing this August, Governor Jenniffer González held a birthday party with tickets costing $2,500 per person.

Puerto Rican communities deserve more than promises. They deserve reliable access to something as basic as clean water.

That’s why this Hispanic Heritage Month, @climaterevolutionnj is partnering with @rebuild.us to raise funds for clean water distribution directly in Puerto Rico.

Come have a cafecito with us and pour a little back for the community 🇵🇷☕️

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re sharing space with our Puerto Rican neighbors and Latine community for an afternoon of coffee, music, and community as we raise funds for clean water during the current water crisis.

Sept. 27th | 12PM to 4PM
@elcoquicafe | Clifton, NJ
Music by @jonjukebox

100% of funds go towards our partnership with REBUILD.US to support local organizations getting clean drinking water directly to communities across Puerto Rico during the current water crisis.
More than half a million people are being impacted, with some communities going months without reliable water.

Come celebrate our culture, connect with community and help us show up for Puerto Rico by getting your ticket and/or donating today 🇵🇷

I flew to Puerto Rico during the water crisis where about 65% of the island’s clean water is lost to leaking pipelines (like the ones that made the potholes we filled with @lostapaboketes).
I was & still remain privileged in my experience and the feeling of guilt weighs heavy. How far do we center comfort over conflict?
At what point do we “stop” and “do the work”? What IS “the work” really?

And thanks to Toi Derricotte, I’m reminded that “JOY IS AN ACT OF RESISTANCE.”
I’ve had deeper debates at 2AM let outs than city council meetings. Built more bonds over a beer than any “breakout session.” I’ve watched people be mad on vacation and listened to stories about people finding happiness in prison.

This world is what we make it. Let me take that leap in the ocean w/you all this fall/winter season! I really miss posting my work but the inner work had to be done first 🩵 taken in Puerto Rico by @fictionfrank

Jersey City celebrated Puerto Rico last weekend, a community known for its music, food and culture, but what about the issues affecting the island back home?

🇵🇷🙏🏽 @fictionfrank talked with two residents at the 66th annual @jcprhac Puerto Rican Parade & Festival who urged everyone in the diaspora to make noise and help fight for rights of Puerto Ricans.

🎥 Watch the video to see what the scene was in Downtown Jersey City and what you 🫵🏽 can do to help take action!
