Our Field No.23 Professional Potting Blend compost has been carefully developed for potting on and the establishment of a broad range of plant species! 🪴

You can also use it for sowing seeds or creating seed beds and planting pockets in existing beds and borders (for delicate seeds, please use our No.7 Seed Compost) 🌱

Field No.23 is a tried and tested professional-grade growing media - and it’s peat free! It outperformed all other treatments (both peat and peat-free) during nursery trials whilst the product was being developed!

Chris and Jo, with the aid of Ben, our technical and horticultural expert, have been working on a peat free compost since 2009, with the recipe slowly evolving into the current, perfected recipe! We are very proud of this compost: the positive feedback we have received, it’s excellent water-holding and drainage properties, and the fact that it is a 100% peat free compost! 🌍

You can buy it online on our website, and you can also add a bag or two onto your order at checkout!

We had a wonderful 3 days at the @bbcgwfair Autumn Fair at @audley_end_house over the weekend! 🌷🪴

Now that Autumm is approaching, lots of discussions were had about the benefits of mulching - and about renovating our lawns after this dry summer! We also got to meet many existing customers which is always lovely! ☺️

Did you go to the Autumn Fair last weekend?

I must have now seen 20+ click bait style articles promoting ‘Plants to survive heatwaves’.

Many of these articles are pushing plants in a generic way that doesn’t consider soil type, aspect, style preference, maintenance preferences, allergies or context.

Luckily, we here to make all these considerations on behalf of our clients. And, just in case it’s not obvious, there’s no definitive list ;)

However, there is one universal thing we can all do. It’s not showy but if you really want to ‘future-proof’ your garden, then mulch and compost is the way forward.

In a previous garden with heavy clay, I lovingly top dressed the borders annually and eventually, after several years of commitment, the soil was much more workable and plants thrived more readily.

Organic matter (compost or well rotted manure) will improve soil retention whilst a mulch will reduce evaporation. So sandy or clay soil, there’s no excuse not to get the spade.

And the best part is that even in the smallest garden, you can make your own compost.

There’s plenty of myths around not using weeds and what you can and can’t add to compost but in general, most things can go in.

Composting will happen fastest with a little warmth and some moisture so feel free to cover up the pile once you’ve finished adding to it. Then turn the pile after a few months.

Hot bin composts have rave reviews if space is limited.

We’re now leaning into ‘no-dig’ as the preferred method of adding compost. This preserves the soil structure (the sciencey bit is that means the nutrients will have a better network for nutrient and water exchange with your plants plus soil captures carbon so not disturbing it reduces the amount of carbon released).

If you’re too busy to make your own compost or just need some stat, then we regularly use Field Compost who are excellent at advising on products and quantities. And no, this isn’t an ad!

Finally, don’t forget that trees and shrubs won’t like having their stems crowed by new soil so leave them in a small hollow if your soil level is already high.

Actual finally, did you know that soil without plants is just ‘dirt’? taken in Ipswich, Suffolk by @field_compost

Field Compost is a family-run business based just outside of Cambridge, producing a range of 100% peat free composts, mulches, topsoil, barks and lawn dressings. They have been peat free since they began in 2010: this was when they first started to develop their peat free potting compost.

I have used their No.23 potting compost for two years, and it is honestly the most incredible product! As you can see from my photos, my seedlings grow exceptionally well & fruitful harvests are the result!

So their No.23 Potting Compost is perfect for potting up and growing flowers, herbs and vegetables, and for sowing many seeds! It has a great water holding capability, and an incredibly soft texture, with added grit for drainage.

They are also the nicest family run business I have ever had the pleasure of meeting 🥺

Good luck everyone! ♥️
