This October, THE EAR AND THE EYE gets bigger, stranger, and a little more unruly.
For our special Halloween Edition, we’re taking over the night for a seven-hour gathering of film, sound, performance & art. Experiences that will embrace the irrational, the absurd, chance, experimentation, provocation, and the breaking of boundaries between art forms.

Expect moving images. Live sound. Performance. Installation. Experiments. Accidents. Things that may be difficult to categorize.

THE EAR AND THE EYE is thrilled to return September 18 with a new collaborative film and music performance by Columbus, Ohio based filmmaker @rogerwarrenbeebe and members of Ann Arbor’s @softkneecollective

Working with multiple projectors, found images, and the “found” landscapes of late capitalism, Roger Beebe creates essayistic films and live cinematic performances that reconsider the images and environments surrounding us. His work has appeared around the globe at such unlikely venues as the CBS Jumbotron in Times Square and McMurdo Station in Antarctica as well as more likely ones including Sundance and the Museum of Modern Art with solo shows at Anthology Film Archives, El Centro de Cultura Digital in Mexico City, and Los Angeles Filmforum among many more.

For this special performance, Beebe will join Soft Knee Collective members Mara Mayer, Otavio Manzano Kavakama, Roberta Michel, and Johnathan Tatara to create a new work bringing moving images and live music into conversation.

Soft Knee Collective is an electroacoustic flexible-instrumentation new music ensemble and creator collective of composers, performers, electronic musicians, and collaborators from an array of disciplines, including music technology, science, visual arts, and design. They create platforms for artists whose voices and work may not always find a place within traditional music spaces. Through collaboration, SKC builds connections across disciplines, support emerging and underrepresented voices, and foster a vibrant creative community. At the heart of their work is a commitment to curiosity and shared experience. Soft Knee Collective design welcoming, inclusive events that invite audiences into the creative process through immersive performances, interdisciplinary projects, and meaningful artistic exchange.

WE BREATHED TOGETHER.

Last Friday, @cadieuxstage became a living, breathing organism as @taqsim.live carried @theearandtheeye through four states of body and mind: Suffocation. Dissonance. Sublime. Volition.

The room inhaled. The walls expanded and contracted. Sound moved through our bodies while images flickered across our collective nervous system. At moments we held our breath. At others, we surrendered to the pulse.

An enormous thank you to @layanjsrour and @noisegrowsonplums of Taqsim for becoming the heart and lungs of this strange creature—transforming analogue and electronic instruments, field recordings and thoughtfully composed moving images into something we didn’t simply hear and see, but felt.

From the constriction of Suffocation, through the tremors of Dissonance, into the opening of the Sublime and finally the release of Volition, you reminded us that listening and seeing is humanity.

Much gratitude to @hiraskitchen__ for nourishing the organism and keeping our bodies very happily fed.

To @_softprop and @convivialcollab for circulating the necessary fluids through the system.

To everyone at Cadieux Stage, for once again giving this unruly body a place to live, breathe and make noise.

And to everyone who came through the doors, listened, watched, ate, drank and gave themselves over to the experience:

YOU WERE THE HEARTBEAT.
