I remember my first year of my PhD. I sat down with my advisor, excited, and said, “I want to publish seven papers.”

She looked at me, smiled, and said that would be difficult unless I published in open-access journals. Too often, there were many equating these types of journals with being unreliable, low impact, or even predatory.

But one thing open-access has always been is accessible. And that is what drives my vision.

Field Notes is an open-access journal + pop-up exhibition platform exploring Black life through research, creativity, and culture. A space where academics, artists, and curious minds come together to rethink what publishing can be.
