Entry 044. Washington DC.

Most days started the same way. Shake off yesterday, run through the day’s presentations out loud where nobody could hear me, get back in time for a shower and coffee.

Wore the steel bracelet all week and figured I’d regret it on the runs. Didn’t.

Kept catching myself glancing down for the stroller that wasn’t there. Glad to be home.

What’s the one habit you refuse to give up when you travel for work?

Entry 030. Wednesday. Kent Narrows.

Drove up early to get some time with just the three of us before the real reason for the trip.

Dinner on the Narrows. USA on the screen inside. Stepped out when the sun started to drop. The light does something different here. Burns orange across Prosperity Bay and holds longer than you expect.

Thursday morning — coffee with the little one while the wife slept in. Lunch back on the water. Then the reason we came was to meet a friend’s new baby for the first time.

The BBChrono on the wrist for all of it.

Same watch. Every field.

Entry 021. Sunday.

Canadian Grand Prix wrapped. Clouds cleared. Guinness poured, the right call for a Sunday afternoon.

Looking forward to getting into the new Jack Carr book this evening. No spoilers, but what did you think?

Entry 046. Saturday, Atlanta.

Rain on the glove before the first swing. The forecast said perfect. Then we reached the first tee, and it came down for three holes.

Mist hung in the trees once it let up. Old friends in the group, so nobody was heading in. Finished the round with an 87.

Reel 017. Washington, D.C. Last Thursday.

It felt like 45 out, so I wore the hoodie. Regretted it about a mile in.

3.44 miles in 35 minutes, an easy sightseeing run. The Mall was nearly empty. It was a good way to start a day of meetings.

Entry 045. Monday evening.

A day or two out from the northeaster, the beach was still putting itself back together. Sand had drifted over the end of the path. Low light, a band of yellow under the clouds, sea oats all leaning the same direction.

Family pictures at a quiet stretch of it. The frames I’ll keep longest were the ones nobody directed: the little one and her mom in between setups, no posing, just the two of them.

Entry 043. Business trip, northbound.

Back on the bracelet for this one. Something about a train car this dated calls for steel.

Laptop closed, Slow Horses lying in wait while the trees blur past. A quiet breather before an evening full of conversation.

Anyone else find a book easier to fall into on a train than anywhere else?

Reel 016. Run club, Tuesday evening.

Beginning to feel like fall. She insisted on the pink Power Rangers costume, the same one her mom wore as a kid, so that’s what she wore in the stroller.

3 miles, 26:59, easy run in the training plan. Purple popsicle at the end, a few minutes at the park, then home.

Entry 042. Friday. Dawn Patrol.

Sunrise over the jetty, salt air still cool. First time in a while we actually beat the heat out there with the @northendrunclub Dawn Patrol crew. 4 miles, 36 minutes, felt decent this morning.

Then coffee at Daybreak, little one wanted to visit a new coffee shop for both of us. She ordered her “cinnamon latte,” a steamer, really, but she’s not interested in the technicality. Sun already climbing, one of those mornings you don’t want to rush through.

Reel 015. Tuesday night, run club.

Every push a little heavier than it should’ve been. Didn’t care.

Good group tonight. Easy pace, easy conversation, the kind of run that doesn’t ask much of you even when the stroller does. 3.2 miles, a little over 29 minutes.

First night the air felt like fall instead of summer.

ENTRY 041.

Different kind of quiet this time. Slow Horses next on the stack, Mick Herron’s Slough House. No hero complex, no clean wins. Just the ones nobody wanted, doing the job anyway.

This one’s sat on the shelf a little over a year. After wrapping up The Fourth Option, it felt like time to finally crack it.

Some nights the mileage is on the wrist. Tonight it’s on both the wrist and the page.

ENTRY 040

Five miles with run club this morning, trail route. Not stroller terrain, so it was a solo one. Got back to the house and she was already asking about a coffee date.

Java Surf after. Iced sea salt caramel for me. She ordered a cinnamon latte, minus anything that would actually make it a latte. Just cinnamon and steamed milk, dressed up like the real thing.

She was thrilled to be out, just the two of us. Didn’t take much. Never does.

What’s your kid’s go-to order that’s basically pretend?
