For years I’ve wanted to make this. A spiritualist once even told me to. Then yesterday, on National Farmers Day, I started mapping the farms I love. 24 hours later, here it is: The Farm Map 🌾

71 farms, 47 weekly markets and 6 local grocers, all within driving distance of Astoria, Queens, and all growing with care. Certified organic, regenerative, or not certified but farming mindfully with little or no spray and till. I’ve been to every farm on this map, and I know I’m forgetting some. More will be added as I travel.

This is where I started. Long before fieldsolutions had a name, I was driving out to these farms, walking their fields and learning from the people who tend them. Everything I make comes from what I found there: respect for the soil, for the plant, and for doing things slowly and well. fieldsolutions is what grew.

Why it matters: industrial agriculture treats soil like dirt. Plowing breaks it open and releases the carbon stored inside it into the air. Synthetic fertilizer washes into rivers and creates dead zones downstream. Year after year, topsoil that took centuries to build simply blows and washes away. Food systems account for roughly a third of global greenhouse gas emissions.

The farms on this map do it differently. No till keeps carbon locked in the ground. Cover crops and grazing animals rebuild living soil. Food travels miles, not continents, and the money stays in local communities.

If we’re paying what we pay for food, let it give something back.

Bites, stings, and poison ivy didn’t get the memo.

This morning, coffee in hand, I watched the birds and squirrels go to town on my neighbor’s pear and fig trees. 🍐🐦🐿️

Every year it’s the same. Astoria really is NYC’s fruit basket, and every year so much of it ends up on the sidewalk.

I love our birds, and they’ve earned their share. (The squirrels are under review.) But there is enough for everyone, and grocery bills are climbing while our community fridges wait for fresh food.

Here’s the honest part: I work a lot. I’m making this on my lunch break, and between my jobs and running fieldsolutions, I don’t have time to organize this.

What I can do is put out the call and connect the people who can, and if there’s one thing I’ve seen in Astoria, it’s that this neighborhood is uniquely communal in spirit.

Everything we make at fieldsolutions starts with plants, so watching a good harvest go to waste hits close to home. Using what already grows here is about as sustainable as it gets.

I love how much food we can grow in a few raised beds in our little Astoria backyard 🥹

Nerdy garden note: I left the lettuce roots in the soil on purpose. Keeping roots in place means less disturbance to soil aggregates, fungal networks and all the tiny organisms living underground. As the roots break down, they add organic matter and leave little channels for water, air and future roots. The soil is a living ecosystem, so I try not to tear it apart every time I harvest something.

Chard and kale are in, with arugula and more kale seeds coming when I have another minute.

Pretty cool for a tiny patch of Queens. 🌱

FIELD TRIP: HARVEST MOON EDITION 🌕🌿

A little look back at the last field trip of summer, now that the weather has made it abundantly clear that summer is, in fact, over.

A lot of what eventually became fieldsolutions started with my interest in agriculture. Knowing your farmer, knowing where your food comes from, and caring about how it’s grown. So naturally, wherever I go, I end up looking for the people growing things there.

This trip took us from my little Astoria garden to Water Mill, Shelter Island, the North Fork, Amagansett and Montauk, and introduced me to some really wonderful farms, growers and food producers along the way.

Yesterday was such a good day 🌿
