Over the past fortnight our staff team have been working hard with techs to install Dear Earth at St Andrews Museum 🌍 Opening on Wednesday this week, this iteration of the exhibition sees the return of Katie Fowlie's popular Mosslings installation and creative activity space, additional behind-the-scenes artist process cabinets and more!

Dear Earth runs from 30 September 2026 to 6 March 2027 at St Andrews Museum and is open from Wed - Sat, 10:30am - 4pm.

Come along to our free, online in-conversation with Simon Whatley and Mike Delaitre, the makers behind the Vessel bench project. Held on Wednesday 7 October 2026 from 6 - 7pm, we will also be joined by Nony Mordi from project partner Fife African and Caribbean Network. The artists will discuss the origins of the project, and will show how they responded to the brief – their approach to design and research, finding common ground in design, their selection of wood, and the technical challenges of the build.

Statement on the Closure of Craft Courses at Edinburgh College of Art 21/09/2026

“Craft Scotland and the other craft support organisations signing this statement are shocked to hear about the proposed closure of the undergraduate Jewellery and Silversmithing, Textiles and Performance Costume courses at Edinburgh College of Art. This will devastate educational opportunities for future generations of professional makers and designers.

We call on University of Edinburgh Principal, Sir Peter Mathieson, Edinburgh College of Art Principal, Professor Juan Cruz, and Vice-Principal, Professor Sarah Prescott, to reverse these planned closures immediately...” Cont. in images above.

Join us for an exciting two-part workshop next month with artist and author Christina Riley (part of our Dear Earth Satellite Programme) 🌎🛰 Explore environmental storytelling across two online evening sessions - these will include reading, discussion and bookmaking.

@fifecontemp Dear Earth exhibition is on the move 🚛

This weekend is the last opportunity to see my planted pots amongst all this great work in Kirkcaldy Galleries before the move to St Andrews museum.

The exhibition will be reopening on 30 September 2026 and will run through to 6 March 2027 🌱

VESSEL for CURIOUS CONVERSATIONS

Kingdom of Fife

Nony Mordi, Founder of Fife African and Caribbean Network, states “Finding out about each other and our different experiences and cultures is a positive way to connect and break down barriers. FACN are looking for a bench that will celebrate this and bring people across Fife together.”

VESSEL was co-designed and crafted by musician Mike Delaitre and designer-artist Simon Whatley. A demountable bench made from a system of locally felled, slot-together components; the Sequoia seat slab drops horizontally onto vertical Douglas Fir supports and tall, live-edge Douglas Fir backs locate into angled slots within the seat plane.

VESSEL is a monumental, sculptural two-person seat that will travel around Fife to various community, education, culture, healthcare settings and support “Curious Conversations” between folk from different cultural / ethnic backgrounds.

The project launched at Dunfermline Carnegie Library & Galleries in June and VESSEL will travel to Falkland Estate next weekend 18-20 September for the SEDA Conference 2026 @scotecodesign

Last chance to see Dear Earth at Kirkcaldy Galleries! Join us in celebrating 20 years of Fife Contemporary with Dear Earth — a landmark exhibition exploring themes of sustainability, the climate emergency and care for our planet 🌍 Dear Earth features work by nine artists who have reflected on their own relationship to a fragile and precarious world, and through their practice have found a way to respond: Ade Adesina, Helen O’Brien, Jeni Reid, Jenny Pope, Naomi Mcintosh, Scott Hunter, Susie Johnston, Will Carey, Zoe Hamill.

Dear Earth concludes on 13 September 2026 in Kirkcaldy Galleries and runs from 30 September 2026 - 6 March 2027 at St Andrews Museum.

Join artists and makers for MUD, a one-day artist development event exploring mud, wild clay, natural foraged pigments and earth-based creative practice.

Produced by Fife Contemporary with Perth UNESCO City of Craft and Folk Arts at St Andrews Botanic Garden, the day will bring together talks, practical activity, peer exchange and discussion around how artists can work creatively and responsibly with materials gathered from the land.

Participants will gain insights into the innovative, provocative and thought-provoking work taking place in Scotland today. They will have space to consider foraging, care, safety and ecological impact while connecting with others interested in material, place and environmental practice

This opportunity is for artists, makers and creative practitioners interested in clay, mud, pigments, foraging, ecology, material research and place-based practice.
