What’s been cooking in Bangkok? 👀🍳

The IMF and World Bank are meeting RIGHT NOW, and we’re pretty sure nobody ordered another serving of austerity. 💀

Because seriously, groceries are getting more expensive, salaries aren’t keeping up, and paying rent AND eating in the same month is starting to feel like a luxury.

Yet somehow, the people making decisions that shape our economies aren’t the ones struggling to afford the basics.

We’re tired of being served the same old economic recipe while the 99% are left picking up the bill.

GUILTY. That was the unanimous verdict delivered by the people at the People’s Inequality Hearing on the World Bank and IMF organized by Fight Inequality Alliance.

The People’s Declaration calls for debt cancellation, fair taxation of wealth, investment in essential public services, and a fairer global financial system—one that puts people and the planet before profit.

Among those who testified was Anora Madrid, youth leader of the Manila Anti-Incinerator Alliance (MAIA), who challenged the World Bank’s proposed US$500 million waste-to-energy facility at Smokey Mountain, Manila. For the community of 23,000 people, the project raises urgent concerns about displacement, loss of livelihoods, pollution, public health, and the long-term costs of financing an incinerator. A project cannot be called clean when communities are left to bear its costs.

Community leaders and activists from Pakistan, Zambia, Indonesia, Ecuador, Kenya, and the Philippines testified to the harms they say international financial institutions’ policies and investments have inflicted on their communities: from cuts to essential public services and burdensome debt to projects threatening human rights, livelihoods, and the environment.

-Grieve Chelwa, Associate Professor and Vatican Jubilee Commissioner on Debt & Development
-Henrik Harboe, Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Founding Government of the International Panel on Inequality

Communities must not be sacrificed in the name of development. Financial institutions must be held accountable, and affected people must have a meaningful say—not only after decisions are made, but before projects are approved and throughout their implementation. by @fightinequality
