Greek islands in the winter are SO special! First @fignfeta trip of 2023 is to Syros!
We loved the capital Hermapoulis- really can make a whole trip out of just wandering the streets. We also rented a car and explored several beaches, more for reconnaissance for the summer months but also just to walk along and enjoy the clean, crisp air and that bright unparalleled Aegean light blessing the #cyclades
For sure wander through the hilltop town of Ano Syros although be prepared to walk a ton of steps down or up. Not much was open in the winter but it was still mesmerizingly atmospheric. You don’t need much on a Greek island to feel healed and refreshed.
We also saw a show at the @apollon_theater_syros - a violin and piano duo playing tango music. We don’t speak much Greek so didn’t understand anything that the emcee was saying but it absolutely didn’t matter. A lot of things transcend language and need very little translation to feel their power.

I already have my eye on several places to return to especially the @castrohotelsyros which is where we got fantastic massage facial and did hammam (ask for Katerina!)- and for sure a bucket list is stay at the @aristidesyros which I ogled on the outside but which is deservingly closed for winter so they can rest!

Syros is fantastic and I highly recommend. I would take off one tiny point for it having a shipyard in the port which is not pleasant to look at if you want to gaze out to sea. But there are plenty of places where you can go and not see that- I would just check that detail when you’re booking a hotel.

A magical summer evening last night in Athens seeing the uncompromising and brilliant avant-garde artist and musician Laurie Anderson!! @laurieandersonofficial

When in Athens, I HIGHLY recommend to try and see a show- any show- at the ancient theatre under the #acropolis called the Odeon of Herodeus Atticus, or Herodeon for short. This 2000+ year old venue is such a gorgeous and atmospheric place to watch any creative endeavor, under the watchful eye of Athens’ patron goddess and her Parthenon temple, in the rays of a bright summer moon, and wrapped in a completely immersive wall of sound… it’s a phenomenally visceral experience sitting in the same seats that the ancients sat in to watch the tragedies and the comedies, and know they laughed and cried and were moved by art and meaning, just like us.

This concert was part of the equally brilliant @athensepidaurusfestival Athens Epidaurus festival, which every summer curates events at many sites around Greece, with such a sharp and innovative vision.

Also bonus tip- if you need a little pick me up snacky before a show, or just a place to sit and people watch in one of the busy tourist spots, I highly recommend a really yummy spot called (what else) Athina restaurant - right across from the Acropolis metro entrance. They have what is probably the best #kopanisti dip I’ve had in Athens - a creamy cheese with a bit of heat and spice. 😊

Hey cuties so today we’re sailing on over to the island of Aegina, one of the closest islands to Athens… now proximity-to-something else being a calling card for any location is generally a very underwhelming reason to go, but the truth is that Aegina does have a strong island vibe and so going for the day just to swim for a few hours and have a meal at one of the many good restaurants can leave you extremely refreshed and healed. But there’s lots more to do as well. Here are a few pics of Aegina and some of its popular offerings.
Aegina has a truly world class temple which is dedicated to the goddess Aphaia - I personally like my island vibes with a side dish of archeology and history so I think the #templeofaphaia is a fantastic addition to your aegina visit. And wandering through ruins in general is, I think, one of the most atmospheric things you can do in Greece- You can genuinely touch and feel history in a very visceral way, and that perspective is both humbling and expansive at the same time.
And of course there are a lot of places with really excellent food - but then again it is actually statistically impossible to get a bad meal on a Greek island, another fact I still need to verify, but I can assure you, while verification is pending, that it’s still true. I’m doing this work so you don’t have to.

Basically the best of a Greek day at the beach

Can’t wait to go soon to my favorite beach in all of the Cyclades (to date)- Plaka Beach. It’s long, sandy, packed with activities and lined with incredible restaurants. As popular as it is, there are still places to go where it is wild and isolated. It’s the perfect mix of sun, sand, food, and sea.
