@filbookfestival was a dream! 📚 🇵🇭 I came in excited and admittedly nervous (as someone who’s not a full-time creative it’s often hard for me to feel belonging in big creative spaces like this one.) However, I left feeling inspired motivated and fulfilled. 10 years ago you could not find enough Filipino books on library shelves to create a display. But now you can almost find Filipino representation in any genre across the shelves.

It was such an honor to sit alongside authors I grew up reading about and authors, who I continue to aspire to write like. I met so many people from different cities and countries who write different artistic mediums, and yet, despite all of our differences, we are so grounded by the culture and community that ties all of our histories and identities together.

I have found it difficult to rack my brain of anything poetic much less creative lately. I often feel like I am stuck in a vacuum of tragedy as I witness many patients face injustices from social systems that I cannot control in my full time job as a therapist. The individual care I make can make differences in people’s daily lives, but I continue to struggle to grapple with the the seemingly impossible shackles of capitalism and the consequences of it.

But this weekend shows me that there’s so much hope left in the world. And as cliché as that may sound, I feel comfort in the stories people tell that help people continue onto the path of healing, community, mobilization, support, celebration, joy and understanding that if we may fight, we must to do together.

Isang bagsak!

Inkstorm panelists!

Pamilya ♥️

The opening night gala of the Filipino American International Book Festival was like a dream! To be surrounded by so many amazing authors and artists was truly an inspiration! We dined on delectable Philippine cuisine seated around tables family style. We listen to speakers readings and even got to see two one-act plays performed — all celebrating the stories and histories of Filipino Americans and the diverse diaspora. The room was full of people wearing gorgeous Filipiniana. I am grateful to be invited this year to present my work, but even more to rub shoulders with these incredible people, and to be reminded that our stories matter not just for our community, but for everyone! Thank you to all the volunteers & committee! by @filbookfestival

💕 This is what it’s all about. Thanks to everyone who picked up a copy of What Lolo Wants at the @filbookfestival in San Francisco. Especially this father and his adorable son. It’s always so heartwarming to see a child pick up a book I wrote and have their parent read it to them. Even heartwarming isn’t a good enough word to describe how it feels. It’s like knowing I did something good for someone else. It puts a smile on my face and in my heart. I hope reading my book also puts a smile on their faces and in their hearts. @kidscanpress #representationmatters by @filbookfestival

My @filbookfestival 8 dump featuring the panel I moderated “Fil-Am Creatives in Food, Design, & Entrepreneurship” featuring Henry Awayan @whiskcakecreations, Cheska Ibasan @cheskaibasan of @kadiwathelabel, Nicole Sanchez @nicojocel of @nianacollection and LeRoid David @leroid.david

Thanks Nicole @nianacollection for coming thru! Loved that you shared what you’ve built and also closing our talk on how we can beat the crab mentality.

Henry of @whiskcakecreations pulling thru with some cupcakes for everyone in the audience! The only person on the panel with a brick and mortar and gave us all insight on what can really build a business that is tied to people’s milestones in birthdays and weddings.

And the one who surprised me at the end of the panel..

My guy @leroid.david whom I nominated to lead this year’s poster and logo design. He delivered and we ALL have been so happy with how it came out.

@cheskaibasan brought fresh insights from her year old brand she built with @kadiwathelabel

Big shoutout to Henry for..

..surprising me with a birthday @whiskcakecreations cake!! Appreciate the birthday song from everyone 🫶
