Decay on display. The beach with wet dogs and surfers. Sand in every crevice. A kite pulling at one hand while the other searched for briny shellfish, feathers, kelp, and bones. I found a wishbone and one whole dollar, a sand dollar—temporary ownership. Catch and release. Everything I handled went back to the ocean. by @filigree.bee

I skipped a rock and my children squealed, amazed by this magic trick. Again! Again, the rings of ripples counted out. We searched for thin round stones. My son called them ‘coins’. And we were wealthy having exchanged our treasures for shimmering water and cold muddy feet.
In ancient times a coin would be placed in the mouth of the dead, to pay the immortal ferryman. Transporter of souls. Would he accept these smooth snones? Perhaps a hummingbird nest with a miniature pinecone. Ambiguous to the payment plan, I will touch these tokens briefly, and feel the sacred nature therein. by @filigree.bee

Creativity thrives in healthy communities. I believe this. It's spinning out some zany idea with kind support. Months ago, I went to my local quilt shop. The exceptional man, who frames my art, suggested gluing my bones to black velvet. I touched and studied bolts of fabric. Quilters, masters of fiber arts, offered help. I anticipated repulsion as I explained my need. Instead, the women saw my bones knit together as beautiful patterns. Like quilt blocks. They helped me find black linen. My framer, cut mats and encouraged me to wrap them in matching linen. From the birder who points out the bird nest, to the friend who plays poop or pellet on my walks, from the framer to the quilters. And you dear viewer, are part of my creative community. Thank you.

My mind's eye can feel the sun on legs. I lay cozy in bed. Reminiscing on that hike. Today the rocks are slick and the trail’s red dirt would stick to my boots. Even the birds, like me, have sheltered from the rain. by @filigree.bee

Twelve Skulled Clover

This year spring came with a broiler setting. A sun so hot the magnolia blossoms turned brown before opening. In one week every outdoor surface had the hazy sheen of sticky pollen. And the birds were quiet. Then it rained, and everything breathed. So I put on my overalls to hunt for bones, which I found. And an egret flew overhead with a vole in its beak.

Everything is tumbled in together. From the violent spray of feathers to the delicate blossoms. Both beautiful, both fleeting. I choose to touch all the things. And feel the edges. To leave little patches of visual delight.

Kestrals, crush much of their prey's bones. I have grown accustomed to the ease of the kite and owl pellets. After countless hours processing the Kestrel pellets, I was amazed by the lack of skulls. The randomness of so many bone fragments. Although supremely challenging, the mosaic surrounding my more traditional mandala was satisfying. I have a deep gratitude to those who made this artwork possible.

Our cat caught a mouse in the house. We gently transferred it to a jar and released it. It’s such a wonder to me, that something so small and fragile, has life.

Investing in Longevity— earlier this year and I thought I had bird flu. A deep cough and ragged breathing. The culprit, super glue fumes. It took me about a month to recover. I’ve changed my art practice and invested in PPE. Just a heads up to all my artist friends - protect yourself from your supplies.

Prepping—I had the opportunity to collect pellets from just outside of Elko, NV. Owing to the limited amount of bones from this specific location, I am testing a variety of patterns. It is tedious and exhilarating. I am forever in search of good tweezers. This set from Enkay has been exceptional. by @filigree.bee
