⏰BREAKING: The Fund for responding to #LossAndDamage (FRLD) adopts decision to respond to the catastrophic #BhoteKoshi Floods in Nepal 🇳🇵 at its first extraordinary Board Meeting

🔎 The Board of the FRLD has responded to the catastrophic Bhote Koshi floods that struck Nepal on August 26, claiming 1,500 lives and leaving over 5,000 unaccounted for.

The decision provisionally sets aside USD 21.6 million (USD 20 million for Nepal and USD 1.6 million for the oversight fee), and invites Nepal to submit a funding request.

⚖️ Responding to the Nepal floods was a critical test for the Board of the FRLD and the Fund's Secretariat.

✅ By adopting the decision, the Fund has taken a significant step forward in demonstrating that the FRLD is different from other climate funds, and that it can support countries and communities on the frontlines of the climate crisis in their greatest hour of need.

📈 However, Nepal's government estimates the cost of loss and damage from the Bhote Koshi floods to be at least USD 2.69 billion, with recovery and reconstruction needs projected at USD 4.71 billion. Despite sending an important signal, today's allocation of USD 20 million — less than half a percent of what Nepal needs to rebuild — is just a drop in the ocean.

✊ Civil society was clear, the FRLD must continue to respond urgently to Nepal and put in place rapid-response and community-access modalities. It's time to #FillTheFund with the trillions needed! Rich polluting countries must provide new and additional grant-based finance in line with their legal obligations.

📣 We call on the Board and FRLD Secretariat to ensure that Nepal continues to receive support to develop and submit a new funding request, and once submitted, that the request is considered and adopted in a second virtual meeting. They should not have to wait until December for a decision to be taken at the 10th meeting of the Board.

Loss and damage finance is not charity. It is a matter of climate justice.

Since COP26, the #LossAndDamageFinanceNow! campaign has brought together young people and allies worldwide to demand finance that responds to the devastating impacts of the climate crisis.

As we look towards COP31, the call remains clear: new, additional, grant-based finance that reaches frontline communities.

No more delays. No more empty promises. Loss and damage finance, now! by @fill_the_fund

🚨 BREAKING: The Loss and Damage Fund has officially convened its first-ever Extraordinary Board Meeting for October 22, 2026, to respond to the catastrophic Bhote Koshi floods in Nepal.

Thanks to sustained pressure from developing country governments and civil society, the Board is set to provisionally set aside USD 21.6 million and pilot a fast-track submission window for Nepal.

This is a historic milestone. It proves that when we hold the line, the system can act. But let's look at the numbers: Nepal's recovery needs are estimated at $4.71 billion. Against that reality, $20 million is less than 0.5%.

We welcome this step, but we demand the scale.

Swipe through to break down what this means, why a permanent rapid-response modality is urgently needed, and why we must continue to #FillTheFund.

🔥 The era of asking polluters politely is over. 🔥

As #PreCOP shines a global spotlight on Australia as #COP31 President of Negotiations, @makebigpolluterspay.au and @fill_the_fund are calling on Australia to #MakeBigPollutersPay.

Climate damage funds meant to support countries and communities on the frontlines of the climate crisis are woefully under-resourced, while coal, oil and gas corporations continue to profit from the pollution driving the damage.

Australia has an opportunity to lead: make big polluters pay a Climate Pollution Levy and direct the money to where the harm is landing.

“A cascading disaster carrying debris 250 feet high at 150 km/hr is not a ‘natural’ event.”

In the recent interview of Harjeet Singh, with TRT World, he broke down the hard truths about the climate crisis in Nepal and why we must move past voluntary charity.

Key takeaways:
⚖️ Legal Reparations: While traditional climate talks avoid compensation, the landmark July 2025 ICJ advisory opinion explicitly states that full reparations are owed for climate harm.

💰 The Financial Gap: The current Loss and Damage Fund has less than $1 billion total, with a $20 million cap per project. Meanwhile, developing nations face $400 billion in annual needs. The mismatch is staggering.

🌱 Systemic Learning: We must design development in harmony with nature, stop prioritizing mitigation over adaptation, and unite across borders to protect the entire Himalayan ecosystem.

Sympathy isn’t enough. It’s time to make polluters pay. 🌍👇

“We will not keep being uncertain about how to respond to such calamities, because they will keep happening more frequently and they will be more severe.” 🛑

Fredrick Otieno of Power Shift Africa breaks down the harsh reality of the climate crisis following the devastating floods in Nepal.

When infrastructure is wiped out and lives are shattered, the burden of recovery cannot fall on developing nations alone. Even with the most ambitious mitigation and adaptation efforts, unavoidable climate disasters are here.

The global community must come together to ensure the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage (FRLD) is fully, adequately, and quality-resourced. Solidarity requires real money, not just empty words.

It’s time to hold developed nations accountable and #FillTheFund. 🌍⚖️

While world leaders gather in New York for the United Nations General Assembly (#UNGA), the devastating reality of the climate crisis continues to unfold on the frontlines.

The catastrophic floods in Nepal were not just a natural disaster, they were a preventable tragedy. As highlighted in this powerful interview, funding decisions made by the U.S. directly impacted the early warning systems that could have alerted communities to the glacial collapse.

The United States is the greatest historical emitter of greenhouse gases on the planet. Yet, as billions of dollars are poured into war and militarization, the funds meant to repair climate harm and protect vulnerable communities remain empty.

As an interconnected global community, we cannot look away. The U.S. has a moral and legal obligation to pay its climate debt. As leaders negotiate at UNGA, our demand is clear: shift the resources, stop fossil fuel expansion, and adequately resource the Loss and Damage Fund.

We must protect our global kin. It is time for the U.S. to pay up and Fill The Fund. 🌍⚖️

When the UN Secretary-General calls for fossil-fuel companies to pay up, you know this demand has become impossible to ignore.

The fossil fuel industry is driving the climate crisis. We need accountability. It’s time to Make Polluters Pay. by @fill_the_fund

This is huge! The UN Secretary-General António Guterres has just used his final General Assembly speech to world leaders to pay tribute to our Make Polluters Pay movement. “You are on the right side of history – keep going.”

His comments come the day after we presented over 2 million signatures from people across the world to the UN.

This movement is powerful. We are changing politics. Get involved! by @fill_the_fund

When disaster strikes, frontline communities cannot wait for bureaucratic delays. 🛑

Right now, the global Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage (FRLD) lacks a rapid response capability. As the catastrophic floods in Nepal have shown, this is a glaring failure in the system that costs lives and deepens devastation.

Caroline from Climate Action Network Canada (@canraccanada ) is calling out this massive gap and pointing directly at the Canadian government:

As one of the world’s largest historical emitters and top exporters of oil, gas, and coal, Canada owes a deep climate debt to nations like Nepal. Solidarity is not enough. Canada must use its seat on the FRLD board to immediately establish and support a rapid response modality. The Fund’s very credibility depends on it.

Furthermore, as Canada defines its new climate finance pledge in the upcoming Fall 2026 budget, at least 20% of those funds must be explicitly dedicated to Loss and Damage.

Canada: It is time to step up, operationalize rapid response, and #FillTheFund. 🇨🇦⚖️🌍

The devastating flash floods in Nepal have made one thing painfully clear: the Global South is done asking for humanitarian aid to fix a crisis they did not create. 🛑

We are incredibly pleased to share a deeply inquisitive and urgently timely new piece, authored by Mausumi Moran Chetia (Postdoctoral Researcher - REPAIR, University of Amsterdam), for the Fill The Fund campaign.

This brilliant piece, "Reparations Now: Fill the Fund, Deliver Climate Justice," dismantles the narrative of "climate charity."

By tracing the history of environmental justice from early grassroots movements to the recent landmark ICJ advisory opinion, Mausumi masterfully articulates why Loss and Damage finance is a matter of strict legal liability and historical debt. ⚖️

The time for reparations is now. We cannot allow the Fund for responding to Loss and Damage (FRLD) to remain an empty vessel while frontline communities are washed away.

A massive thank you to Mausumi Moran Chetia for this vital contribution. 🌍 @unwagedmusings
