A recent magazine shoot with Maurice from The Bike Pit over at Townsend Enterprise Park.

The Bike Pit/ Bikes + Minds is a cross-community charity – part of community and local government-sponsored initiatives to bring Catholic and Protestant sides of the community into shared spaces. They are open on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and all day on Saturdays and it’s all very informal – if you’ve got a bike and you need help, you can just turn up.

“It’s a fully-equipped workshop with ramps and tools and with knowledgeable people on hand,” says Maurice. “You do work on your own bike, though, albeit under supervision. And then there’s coffee available upstairs. All they ask is that people pop a couple of bob in the tin to cover tea, coffee, milk and biscuits.”

“We’ve covered all sorts, really. For example, there are people out there with puncture repair kits but who don’t know how to use them, so we’ve run tutorials on that. We’ve talked about tyre pressures (the numbers of people who lower their tyre pressures to have more rubber on the road is astounding) or why we wear boots (how high your boots are normally determines where your leg breaks and ankles are the most difficult bit for medical professionals to rebuild). We’ve also covered first-aid topics such as how to lift a downed bike, or how to remove a helmet.
