The Truman Show predicted surveillance culture in 1998 and describes today more accurately than anything written recently. Network was written in 1976 and remains the most precise diagnosis of modern media ever produced. Eternal Sunshine barely got made then and would not get made today.

My Best Friend’s Wedding ends without giving the audience what it came for and is better for it. The Sweetest Thing was dismissed on release and deserves reappraisal. Little Black Book ends by pulling the rug in a way most romantic comedies would never attempt. Watching the Detectives is almost entirely unknown and exactly the kind of film that used to get made without anyone needing to justify why.

Wild Tales escalates each of its six stories from plausible to completely unhinged with perfect comic timing. One Cut of the Dead was made for $25,000 and is one of the most formally inventive films of its decade and you should know nothing about it before you watch it.

Locke is Tom Hardy alone in a car for eighty-three minutes and is one of the finest character studies of its decade. Calibre is on Netflix and almost nobody has seen it and it is relentless from its midpoint.

Blue Ruin takes the revenge thriller apart by showing what revenge looks like when the person seeking it has no idea what they are doing. The Fits runs sixty-five minutes and leaves nothing out. Sebastian Stan arrived in America at twelve speaking almost no English, auditioned for Captain America and lost the lead, and has been playing Bucky Barnes for fifteen years across films, a series, and counting. He wore two pounds of prosthetics every day for A Different Man and wore the makeup in public to understand what his character experienced.

He won the Silver Bear at Berlin and the Golden Globe for the same performance while most of his Marvel audience had not yet seen the film. The Romanian kid who trained at Rutgers and Shakespeare’s Globe became one of the most quietly decorated actors of his generation.

One Night Only has a 44 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and an audience score hovering in the low 70s and the gap between those two numbers is the entire conversation. Critics found the premise creepy and underwritten. Audiences found it silly and fun. Both are correct about different parts of the same film.

Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner are doing more than the script asks of them and every review regardless of score acknowledges it. The box office has been soft and the debate has been loud. For a mid-budget rom-com in 2026 that is not nothing.

The Simpsons will reportedly end in 2029 after season 40.

Bart Simpson’s voice actress just sparked end of an era talk. Nancy Cartwright said on a podcast that she personally believes The Simpsons will wrap up after season 40, which would land around 2029, though she was clear it was her own opinion and not an official announcement.

The show is renewed through season 40 and a second Simpsons Movie is coming in 2027, so nothing is confirmed yet. Still, after nearly 40 years on air, even a passing comment from the cast is enough to get fans talking.
